I have the first Japanese masterings of both albums which to my ears sound pretty good as well.
Below is the link to Mr Hoffmans preferred master of the cd.
Though some of us on his forum prefer other masterings of the set.
I love War time Furty recordings with Berliner.
I took an advantage of 50% off Linn records from Presto.
St. John Passion Dunedin Consort. Going to hear them do this program this month!
So far all the Ticciati CDs/Records have been excellent so curious to see how he does the Symphonie Fantastique.
I have many versions of Born to run, many from live albums and although they sound authentic, they don’t sound good (although I quite like Live at the Main Point 1975 for being ‘Intimate’). The best version I have is probably from a bluray concert but I play that on a different system so hard to compare.
I don’t think Bruce cared too much, as long you could hear he was working hard, bit like talking heads and REM which are shocking in quality too, until quite recently (2000+?) when the general standard is just way better for everyone. We never complained about SQ for Adele!
In contrast, the beatles and rolling stones somewhat later have always been interested in proper mixing and sound quality.
‘Won’ on ebay auction for £0.01.
Not bad for an SACD version of one of the best albums ever. Postage was £1.90!!!
I’m going to publicly display my ignorance
What is it?
I have that version of Symphonie Fantastique on CD. I think it’s a super version and a good recording too. I bought it after hearing a high resolution copy through ND555 and Statement amplification at Naim Audio, which @Xanthe had brought to a forum day at HQ. The hi-res version on that system was exceptionally good.
I wish they would release the vinyl version~ ( that is my hi-res format ) ![]()
I remember doing the AB comparo beween this SACD and DVD-A on an Meridian player.
DVD-A won.
To this date I am not sure why that format did not survive as I thought in general DVD-a always sounded better to my ears than an SACD.
Tbf, I played it this afternoon. CD version is better mix. Ah well, £1.91 down the drain. I might sell it for £2…
Which release do you have?
How that Japanese reissue fair to the German release?
Have you ever compared them to the original vinyl release?
Japan one sounds better. Yes, I have a couple of vinyl copies. Tbf, they’re all good!
for me the original US pressing ( which I paid 2.99USD) sounds miles better than the US CD releases!
So now I have another version of Born to Run, the rmeastered 2005 30th anniversary.
Sounds good, not great, but distinctively less muffled and more open (easy to pick out individual contributions and bruce is more present) than non remastered version. And it has two Dvds too, all for £10 including postage.
In practice vinyl has lower resolution than red book.
It’s typically limited to 70db dynamic range by the pressing process and limitations on cartridges, and it only very rarely exceeds 78dB irrespective of the source material.
Red book recording is capable of 120dB dynamic range and is very often limited by the dynamic range of the source material.
Irrespective of which you prefer, digital is, in practice, higher resolution.
