What Was The Last Vinyl You Bought?

Reminds me of a 12" by UK Reggae Band The Cimarons that I have.
Pressed on clear vinyl with a Red, Gold & Green band across the diameter.
The SQ is fantastic apart from the loud clunk clunk… clunk clunk… as the stylus crosses the band every half rotation.
Plays havoc with me woofers guvnor!

I actually don’t know as I did not notice. I get pops and crackles here and there regardless of the type of vinyl. I was actually hesitant to say yes or no as I don’t really have an opinion about it.

@Dreadatthecontrols I was thinking that this may have come across as dismissive. Let’s say that there are folks here who has been listening to vinyl for as long as I have been alive and I’m hitting year two. Also some folks have vinyl equipment that costs at least twice my entire sound setup. So it’s hard for me to say it’s good or not. I don’t think they are noisier as a rule. I just don’t think that can be said BY ME in an authoritative way.

I have dug out a couple of picture discs one from 1991 and another one from 2011 that you lot will find interesting and is verboten on Discogs. I’ll give them a spin and report back later after I have done my compulsory domestic duties.

Verboten, why? I’m intrigued!
To be fair you would probably need to compare with the equivalent standard pressing.

What I was quoting re the differences in manufacturing are facts which you can research for yourself.
I also have been listening to and buying vinyl records for decades and have a more than capable system.

For the factual reasons I outlined, they nearly always sounded poor compared to standard black vinyl, it’s no myth, coloured vinyl generally has a widely recognised bad reputation historically amongst seasoned record buyers, not without good reason, but your missing the point that I was asking if this is still the case? I dont know, from experience though I prefer to err on the side of caution.

So in other words still partially problematic?
Ok, I’m teasing, great fun as a collectors novelty but not as a serious sounding record, that’s just not the raison detre of a picture disc.

It’s probably a boot or “unofficial release”, which can be listed but not sold on Discogs…AFAIK.

Right, two picture discs unearthed & listened to, nether the one I was originally looking for, but hey.

First of all my use of ‘atleast parially overcome’ was just me being cautious as my own listening is not really a conclusive test, another example and another pair of ears could well render a different opinion.

The first picture disc I tried is Perfect Place by Voice of the Beehive from 1991, it is a 10" 45 with a colour picture on side A and B&W on side B. On side A are two studio tracks on side B are two live tracks from a BBC Radio 1 ‘In Concert’ performance.
The discogs page with pictures is here

I will be honest, side A sounds terrible with lots of unpleasant distortion, if all picture discs sounded like this then I would not buy any. Side B is a failrly typical OK but not great live recording, the regular old BBC Peel sessions discs of Joy Division, Family, Lindisfarne etc are much better. I wouldn’t buy this today.

The second disc is 12" 33 from 2011, Pink Floyd - More Rare Beauties.

Picture both sides, side A as above side B similar, I think this came from Piccadilly Records, but it may have been Music Mania in Newcastle Under Lyme, either way I bought it new. The disc is a collection of slightly strange outtakes and demos that vary from the wonderful to rather odd, side A is spot on, almost no pops & clicks, no extra surface noise, side B has a wee click on every revolution for the first track and a half, probably a minor scratch but it is impossible to see. I rarely play any Pink Floyd these days but I would describe this as an unmissable gem for the more sonically adventurious listener (that’s me), I 'll be playing this again, and again. I must look for more of the same.
If all picture discs are like this then yes, buy them.

So I guess it’s 50/50, for me it is yes but then I have always been a bit iof a gambler when it comes to buying vinyl.

Post just in, ordered yesterday great service from our Royal Mail against challenging times.
First up from my favourite Jamaican specialist Dub Vendor.
The lovely Japanese Saxophonist Megumi Mesaku. She was filmed by a member of the public busking in the tube over classic Jamaican Rocksteady riddims, the video went viral leading to her recording this fine instrumental album with Mafia & Fluxy

Reggae George Three Wicked Men is glorious roots Reggae obscurity recorded at Tuff Gong Studios, hard to find in good nick, I’ve been after this tune for donkeys years and came across this 10" re issue that has the original Jamaican Mix & Dub with a new remix on the flip, nice one!

I am very pleased to find that Music On Vinyl have been quietly re issuing some pretty essential classic Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae and Dub albums.
To see if their any good in terms of SQ I have selected as a sampler this great, classic mid seventies period, Heptones album Night Food.

Thought I’d try two Impex classic releases, which need no introduction here, I’m sure.

And Kaki’s latest, of course! Love her stuff.

Headphones night, tonight

I’m envious of your Friday night in San Francisco. I bought a used original. It sounds a bit, well, used, but that doesn’t mask a great record.

It’s not an album I know much of except through reputation, which is odd as I love McLaughlin’s work with Miles, his own My Goal’s Beyond etc, adored Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti…and liked a fair bit of 4th Dimension.

Looking good forward to hearing it for the first time!

I’m very fond of ‘Friday Night in San Francisco’: I have the vinyl (I think I have the cd too…).
They did a second album (studio) called ‘Passion, Grace and Fire’. I’d forgotten about that one and haven’t played it for ages - thanks for the prompt!
