What Was The Last Vinyl You Bought?

True. It can really hit you hard, if not prepared, when it kicks in. As I found out listening to ”Sisters” on El Camino, switching from something else when streaming.

The Delta Kream album boots yer woofers!

Joe Turner - Big Joe Rides Again (Speakers Corner/Atlantic)

Oh!..and a free beer mat..which is nice!

That the experts inducted ‘Big Joe’ Turner into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1983, i.e. during his lifetime, is surely in order when one considers how he expressed his attitude to life with his 12-bar stylistic freedom. That he was additionally honoured by being posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, however, makes one wonder whether the incorruptible experts had made a mistake. No matter what: this giant of a man with his big, gentle voice had certainly earned a place of honour in the era of swing as well.

Turner, who appeared on stage with Goodman, Ellington, Tatum and – in later years – with Gillespie and Eldridge, offers his listeners many facets of the blues. The opening number, “Switchin’ In The Kitchen”, is a fairly fast boogie-woogie where the vocal swings freely with sharp blasts in the background. Other swinging numbers, in which jazz champions such as Coleman Hawkins and Ernie Royal perform solos, include several ballad-like evergreens (“Pennies From Heaven”), which Turner and his band elaborate to become an imposing aria (“Until The Real Thing Comes Along”).

The grooves of this LP are distinguished by means of the open, unfiltered Atlantic sound. The saxophone solos in particular, complete with the clicking of the valves and blowing noise, give one the feeling that the soloist is performing in your living room.

“Big Joe Rides Again” - Big Joe Turner (voc); Coleman Hawkins (ts); Jerome Richardson (as); Ernie Royal, Jimmy Nottingham (tp); Lawrence Brown (tb); Jimmy Jones (p); Jim Hall (g); Doug Watkins (b); Charlie P**ersip (dr); a.o.

Love the Georgia Satellites and Dan Baird and this record captures them perfectly.
However it’s a bit unprofessional. At the end of Side 3 there is sudden silence before the song “Keep Your Hands To Yourself” finishes then at the start of Side 4 you get the last few bars of it before it segues into “Sheila”. Bizarre. Reminds me very much of home taping and the cassette running out halfway through a song.
There are also a few slight dropouts as if the tape had aged poorly.
Enjoyable, but flawed.

Sound quality pretty good for a lost recording of a performance from 1958 I think.

Carol Thompson - Hopelessly in Love, 40th Anniversary Reissue (2021)

To replace my warped original perfect music for the Summer.

Anyone for Human League. I couldn’t resist getting this 40th anniversary limited edition, half speed master RSD drop. Maybe some of the best new age music of the 80s. I first heard this on a walkman with on the ear foam headphones.

‘Tommy’ - The Who.

Half speed Abbey Road remaster.

Only listened to side 1 - sounds very impressive.

Also pleased that the four sides are in the right sequence, unlike my existing version. Still supplied in horrible rough paper inner sleeves though.

I got this just before leaving… slightly dished but great sounding and cool album. For some reason, this just sounds better in my turntable than streaming.

I have been turned on to Art Pepper after binge watching Bosch (highlight in a different thread)… now excited to see Art Pepper and Chet Baker “Playboys” aka “Picture of Health” is being released as a Tone Poet later this year.
