I suspect you already know but from the same Acoustic Sounds series Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section is released early next year and is even better IMO than
+Eleven.
Thanks… that was actually the first album I got into and definitely like it a lot. Will keep an eye on the site to order / preorder when it comes up. Good to know!
As an aside: have you any experience using one of those spindle clamps to manage a small amount of dish on a disc? I’ve only ever sent one back for replacement (a Blue Note Classic that was like a bowl and couldn’t play at all in the concave side). I’m nervous for things shipped cross border (to Canada from the US). The +11 is playable (and silent, lovely) so I did not attempt an exchange. But now I’m thinking of getting the ClearAudio clamp available for my Cincept Active.
Yes, I have just got this too! Not listened yet. My favourite Gary Boyle album is ‘The Dancer’ from 1977. Love all of it but ‘Almond Burfi’ and ‘Pendle Mist’ stand out for me. Those pressings of Gary’s early solo work on the Gull label (‘The Dancer’ and ‘Electric Glide’) are superb in my view. There is a BBC John Peel Session out on an Isotope CD which contains alternative versions of tracks from ‘The Dancer’ as well as some BBC ‘In Concert’ recordings of Gary’s band ‘Isotope’ from the early 1970s. I guess you have that, well worth finding if not!
That ProJect record cleaner is excellent. I bought mine in 2017 and it made a huge difference. Money well spent and way cheaper than the Keith Monks etc.
I like it a lot! Also the young drummer is superb. Several months ago I heard and saw this very band live in the Konzerthaus in Vienna - one of the first events after the lock down.
Everyone was so happy that live music was possible again and these three musicians moved me deeply with their music.
Enjoy!
Ghosted by Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin. Looking forward to getting stuck into this one…
I used a Michell Clamp once for a couple years but after I got an LP12 I sold it on now that I have a Rega I may look into using one again for slightly warped records.
I’ve ordered one to try it out. Thanks Bob.
My favourite Art Pepper album from Contemporary is the somewhat unfortunately named Smack Up. Another superb recording from Roy DuNann too.
I’m looking forward to receiving the new Craft reissues - it will be interesting to compare against the '80s Boplicity reissues.
The mono mix of Meets The Rhythm Section that Craft released for RSD is superb, better than the stereo imo.
But why release the Mono as a ltd RSD and the Stereo as a regular release, just ridiculousl
It’s a shame they weren’t offered together as a set.
What was wrong with the other three, Kev?![]()
Good idea!
Btw I have the Craft Meets The Rhythm Section Mono already mentioned and the Barney Kessell Poll Winners, there very good, looking forward to the others
Oh, and Art Pepper + Eleven, I forgot that one
Unfortunately I’ve not heard Smack it Up beyond a cursory flick through but will pay it more attention.
The Craft +Eleven is exceptional and even though I already have an Analogue Productions copy of Meets the Rhythm Section I’ve still ordered a Craft copy to compare but I’m sure it will be exceptional unfortunately though the release is now March 2023.
Not on gold translucent vinyl, or with a gatefold sleeve…
Smack Up
