Which UK mobile network is best?

Is Apple TV something like Netflix?

Does it have good content?

I think we once used it to watch a documentary film about Manfred Eicher and the music label ECM.

Apple TV is an on demand service like Netflix. It doesn’t have a huge amount of content but a lot of what is there is very high quality indeed. Slow Horses and Severance are 2 shows that I’ve really enjoyed.

And Silo and See …… note the continued alliteration, definitely something in the essses.

That ECM documentary I mentioned is called ā€˜Sounds and Silence’ as it happens!

In case anyone is interested in family plans, here is the correspondence I just received for Tesco, which came after I’d bought the O2 deal:

I am trying to buy 5 accounts for the 5 of us in my family on your site. I need to ask some Qs about how it works that are not answered by your FAQs. Q1. Does each person need their own Clubcard to qualify for Family Perks? Q2. Is the Family Perk Ā£1 off each account, or just Ā£1 off the total bill. I’m trying to buy five accounts at Ā£11 for 30Meg and it’s only letting me have 1 discount of Ā£1 - so it looks like I’ll have to pay Ā£54 a month for 24 months instead of Ā£50 a month for 24 months.
Please explain!

Hi James, thanks for getting in touch, Your Clubcard will cover all the numbers on the account so you’ll only need the one. Family Perks are available on all SIM contracts with only the Family Plan being exempt so you would get them with the current deals your looking at.

We’ve tested this on our website and can see the issue your facing when trying to add these. We’ve raised this with our Tech department who’ll investigate this and resolve the error.

Sorry for any inconvenience and as soon as we have any more information we’ll let you know. If you would like to go ahead with the order we’ll look to adding the family perks for you once resolved.

EDIT: 2 hours later they added:

Hi James, we’ve just tried again now and the option to add Family Perks seems to be working now.

Edit: But as far as I can tell, it’s still not working properly.

eBay…! All 5 of my various iPhones (and 2 Apple TV’s and an iPad) came from eBay. Only one of these was Not As Described and was sent back. Otherwise - Problem Free.

Yes - and also a ā€˜home media receiver’ -

To really confuse, I have my Netflix on my Apple TV - along with BBC iPlayer, and others. I also have Apple TV on my Apple TV - but I do not use it…

I suppose to be precise the streaming service is called Apple TV+ and available on all sorts of devices whereas Apple TV is a small streaming box that can have lots of streaming services on it.

I would agree with your precision… :expressionless:

This - is an Apple TV…!

Apple STB more like.

That’s not where my Apple TV lives…

I’ll be moving to Lebara - Ā£4.40 for 3Gb. 99p for first six months.

Great value.

Please post and say how the service and coverage is when you move to it.

Does it have wifi calling and EU roaming and flexibility to change within tariffs?

Yes, yes for Europe, yes. They use the Vodafone network and are a Martin Lewis best buy. A friend has been running with them for a while and is pleased with the service and price.

I’ve recently moved from Vodafone to Lebara, without any difficulties. Halved my monthly outlay on a sim only monthly renewable agreement. Was able to transfer my mobile number with the pac code. Using Lebara as it works with the Vodafone network as Vodafone offers the best mobile signal in my locality.

I am on O2 with an iPhone 12 and wifi calling, given poor mobile signal at home. I definitely cannot send SMS text to a non-iPhone user - I tried yesterday and it hasn’t sent. For receiving, I am not clear whether I had sufficient signal to receive recently or whether it was over wifi. Texts from banks and google, do seem to be received.

edit - I’m under the impression, that even when my iPhone has a good wifi signal, the phone attempts to stay with mobile signal - I just picked my phone up and it showed no service, while another handset (iPhone XR) was on wifi calling. This may be why texts don’t send, who knows!

Not all android phones are equal, and some Android build won’t support wifi calling with certain carriers… I had to look into this professionally last year and it was a bit of a mine field… good news is that very recent Android phones seem to behave better and have better compatibility with the carrier wifi build/drivers.
Also the roaming transition between wifi and mobile signal and vice versa seems to vary quite a bit as well.

In the end i found last year was to actually test and confirm a specific build of Android and phone was compatible with wifi calling for a given mobile network, before embarking major procurements. Might be improved now, and when it works it works very well.

My iOS phone works fine on EE for wifi calling and receiving, though I did have issues earlier this year with o2 and iOS and wifi calling, I have moved away from o2 now so don’t know if they have better resolved it now.

I switch my iPhone to Airplane mode when I am at home but have WiFi enabled which ensures that it stays on WiFi Calling. It seems to make the battery last a little bit longer too without the cellular antenna enabled.

As always Simon, your knowledge is much appreciated, thank you. It is good to know that the marketing waffle, isn’t born out in the real world.
My biggest frustration, living in a dip where all mobile signals are poor and the number of residents wouldn’t justify the investment, is the discontinuing of boost boxes, which were 3G. That has meant after ten years of good coverage near the box, has ceased.
I would invest in an outdoor aerial / booster, but of course to get such a thing to work, requires a signal, which is poor. I’m retaining my landline and when necessary, do call divert - which requires a signal to activate - round and round we go!

Good advice - with two handsets, a 12 and a XR, the latter goes through battery at a much faster rate than the other. I think the 12 has better reception, so that tallies with your comment.
