Battery consumption vs signal strength and different mobiles… this is a fascinating area and really varies between phone models and manufacturers, however so I understand manufacturers don’t permit carriers to release info on this for their products, but it very much varies, … the same goes for signal strength performance too.
Same here when at home, airplane mode on then WiFi on saves the phone from constantly searching for a cell signal that more often than not doesn’t exist.
On O2 network, recent experience - using wifi calling on iPhone 12 / XR - SMS text from an android phone is received when wifi calling is active, but replying, message is not sent.
Similarly initiating a new message via wifi calling to an android phone - message not sent.
Some progress; does allow verification codes to be received, ymmv.
If the person you are texting with is a regular contact (eg friend or relative) then WhatsApp or Signal are a better way to message. Both use mobile data so don’t care about whether either/both mobiles are on WiFi or mobile connected. And you can send images for free.
But if it’s the guy coming to service your boiler or the Tesco delivery man, then you probably are stuck with SMS.
Thank you - in the end I moved all five of us over onto this deal so it’s £40 a month for 30 GB each.
We were paying 50 quid a month for a fraction of that bandwidth on Plusnet.
And we get wifi calling and EU roaming, and the best coverage in my city.
If anyone fancies it, I think the deal is still open on moneysupermarket.
If you are paying the bill for all five can you not get the 20% discount on the other 4 lines?
Not as far as I know, because I didn’t buy them direct from O2, so I don’t think that scheme applies.
By the way, the customer service I’ve had from them so far has been pretty good.
Unless I’m mistaken you did buy direct from O2, moneysupermarket simply directed you to the O2 website where you made your purchase. I did the same and as far as I’m concerned I bought direct from O2. Can’t do any harm to go to the O2 website to see if you can set up the family plan or give them a call. Worst that can happen is you keep paying £40, best case you get the 20% discount on the other 4 lines and save yourself £76 over the year.
Looks like it fails on both of the first two conditions:
- Eligibility: The Offer is only available to O2 account holders with a new or existing Pay Monthly contract who take out one or more additional eligible contract/s (up to a maximum of 20) through any direct O2 channel together with an eligible tariff during the Offer Period
- A Qualifying Connections is a consumer mobile or mobile broadband Refresh contract with a standard, non-promotional tariff or such other tariff/s that O2 shall identify as eligible in promotional material. Certain tariffs may only be eligible for this Offer at certain times, so please check marketing material to ensure eligibility before you buy: 2.1 Business, Sharer Plan, Sim Only and Pay As You Go customers are not eligible.
I still think you pass on the first point but if it excludes SIM only then I guess you’re out of luck. But even so, £8 for what you’re getting is a fairly decent deal especially when you factor in the extras like 3 months free Disney+, Apple TV+ and priority ticket access.
Or maybe you are eligible?
Check Multisave eligibility
Use our eligibility checklist to see if you can claim this offer.
- The lead connection is on a Pay Monthly or sim only tariff.
- To get the airtime discount, make sure you have an existing Pay Monthly or sim only tariff that isn’t already discounted, or part of another promotion. Check with an O2 Guru if you’re unsure.
- You’ve take out a new eligible O2 Refresh or sim only contract.
- All connections are registered under the same billing address as the lead device.
Also…
You’ll need to have a lead connection, and at least one additional connection, on an eligible O2 Refresh or sim only tariff. To get the discount, you’ll need to register each additional connection within 28 days of getting them.
If you’re on an eligible tariff, text LOYALTY to 21500 and follow the instructions to register from your phone. We’ll text you confirmation once they’re setup.
Got to be worth a call to make sure or use the SMS service.
I think it’s a great deal given all the above.
I haven’t checked in detail, but I think it’s cheaper than an O2 family plan.
Well – you nailed it again!
They gave me a 20% discount on two of my four lines.
She couldn’t explain it clearly, but basically you get the multisave/family discount on every second line.
So an already excellent deal just became even more excellent. ![]()

I also got her to enable Wi-Fi calling on the accounts.
A good outcome ![]()
I think that makes it about £36 a month in total for five accounts.
One of the agents told me that they let the price of contracts run on at the same price after the contract ends (in 12 months).
If so, it’s a discount in perpetuity.
Well - I just got O2 and Wow!
The WiFi Calling is crystal clear.
I had terrible reception here with PlusNet/EE and also when I just installed the O2 SIM - but the second I enabled WiFi Calling, it sounds amazing. ![]()
We live in an area with barely a signal from any of the networks so WiFi calling is a must and the sound is always crystal clear on that. What you might want to consider is when at home first of all turn airplane mode on then turn WiFi on. That will stop the phone looking for a weak or non-existent mobile signal, resulting in clearer calls and also improved battery life. You just have to remember to switch airplane mode off when you go out, but you soon get used to that.
For some reason my texting has stopped working.
My mileage is similar.
On O2 network with iPhone 11, when I send SMS texts, message is not sent.
I suppose I should call O2 again and ask them what’s up?
More likely iMessage is getting in the way of things, especially if Android sending an sms to an iPhone works.
As is often the case, Apple seems to think it is the only player in the game ![]()
It isn’t an O2 network problem as with my Android phone on O2 with wifi calling enabled I can send and receive SMS messages without a problem.
