Which UK mobile network is best?

I only got my first smartphone less than a year ago (aged 59) - it’s an iPhone 11.

So I will have to use other messaging services like WhatsApp, as mentioned above?

First thing I’d try is switching iMessage off and see how that goes. That said, do many people still use SMS much? Most of my text messaging is done via whatsapp and that works seamlessly between Android and iOS (and I’m a year older than you :slight_smile: ).

What’s the advantage of switching iMessage off?

At a guess I’d say being able to send sms to non-Apple users but as one who does not and never will own an iOS device I can’t say for sure. But if switching it off still doesn’t let you send sms to non-Apple devices you may as well leave it on and I’m guessing that to send to those devices you might have to switch WiFi calling off temporarily. iMessage really is a pain in the neck all the time devices other than iOS exist :slightly_smiling_face:

@anon77199223 there is afaik, no advantage to turning off iMessage.
While I was doing a web search, I rather suspected from earlier posts that elverdiblanco, was anti - Apple (see post above).
I found this comment, which may or may not be wide spread “most cell phone carriers do not support sending text messages via WiFi”
We each choose what suits us, I’m another full house Apple user, but I don’t criticise anyone else’s choice.
If you are able to exchange text via an app, that’s good; I just ignore the unhelpful comments, most of us are trying to find a work around to your OP.
I have two regular contacts with Android, one of whom I doubt has a data contract, so it has to be text.
What is really frustrating, despite being in a poor signal area, for the past ten years, I had an O2 boost box, which dealt equally well with text and calls. Even wifi calling is flaky on at least one handset, ymmv.

So how do you send texts to your Android contacts? Over the cellular network with no WiFi calling involved?
As I said earlier I’m in a poor signal area and my phone is permanently on airplane mode on and WiFi calling on when I’m at home and I have no problems sending or receiving text messages from either iPhone or Android users. The problem here is Apple :slightly_smiling_face:

Strange thing is I am an anti-Apple person who has an iPhone.

Apple is a tax dodger, and responsible for an enormous mountain of e-waste thanks to their planned obsolescence strategies.

Their products are designed to maximise profit, and then they pay lip service to helping customers.

But I have to admit the phone is well engineered, and they have good skills in software, but - see above.

iMessage on my iPhone worked fine when I was with Plusnet/EE.

Have you asked O2 whether they can help to get texting to work on your iPhone?

If you disable WiFi calling, does the iPhone then send texts ok?

I guess it will probably work fine on O2 if you switch WiFi calling off or is that not the case?
Were you using WiFi calling on Plusnet?

No, my texts are not working properly - only a few seem to work.

This does not change if I switch WiFi calling or Airplane Mode on or off.

Plusnet has no WiFi calling.

Are the other 4 lines on the account iphones and do any of them have the same problem? If one or more of them are OK then that would suggest a setting on your phone might need to be changed.

No it’s day two but I think we’ve all got the same problem with iMessage.

So far, I haven’t had time to work out whether replies moved to incoming or outgoing messages.

SMS on VOIP is of high interest to me, as I bounce between two (non-UK) countries. It’s not offered by my home provider (yet): they have it for their business clients, but not residential. I can have otherwise full access to services - voice calling, voicemails, etc. - via mobile apps wherever I have an internet data connection on my iPhone (by cellular or wifi fi, whichever).

So I’m following this UK thread with interest… and a little bit of jealousy given the very attractive pricing you’ve received @anon77199223 !

After googling, I went over to the O2 UK forum, where SMS (ie regular text messaging, not iMessages or WhatsApp or Signal) issues over WiFi seem to get a lot of coverage. It seems to be unclear / unsettled even now, some years after this was introduced by O2 (first on Android, then on iPhone). It works for lots of iPhone users; it was working but now fails for lots of iPhone users; it works for receiving but not sending for lots of iPhone users; it never worked for lots of iPhone users… chaos! I saw similar reports for Android, but mainly my interest was iPhones (since there was a hoopla when the service was introduced on Android, but nothing major for iPhone).

Anyway, just sharing what I saw and possibly adding reassurance that you’re not alone in being confused by different answers from O2 support … as recently as last month, someone was told it only works on Android by one support person and that it also works on iOS by a different service person!

There were some tips and tricks that might be worth looking at, including using alternate carrier settings. Perhaps playing the support-line waiting game and asking for escalation to senior level help might be better for you.

All that said: it’s not necessarily a device hardware issue (unless for very old or unsupported devices) and it’s certainly not something to blame on Apple devices writ large.

Good luck with resolving this… I hope it all works out and that such services penetrate further afield!

If you have changed sim cards, when you changed networks, then if iMessage - as distinct from SMS text - is not working, then it may be that you need a reset - not the one that deletes all data, mind! "Settings/General/scroll down to - Transfer or Reset iPhone/ Reset
I’m not clear as to what you mean about moving messages. In iMessage the contact being messaged, shows both incoming and outgoing messages - unlike iMail / Mail.

Alan, the O2 issue was much as I understood and you describe.
I think with the disruption that will now occur at O2/Virgin, progress on resolutions will be impacted.
If you didn’t see my earlier comment, all was well with calls and texts on O2, until O2 decided to no longer support their boostbox; worked fine for ten years!

Sorry, that was a typo which comes from me dictating posts into my iPhone.

What I was trying to say is that I haven’t yet worked out exactly what type of problems with messaging each of the four iPhones in my family has got.

Even on my own iPhone, I haven’t worked out whether it’s an intermittent fault or a completely consistent fault.

Not have I managed to work out yet whether it only affects outgoing messages, or some incoming messages too.

Is there an SMS function in iPhones apart from the iMessage app?
