It was my 66th Birthday this week. Mrs R said: “I’ve been a bit rubbish getting you a bottle of malt in time, so we have to go to the Whisky Shop in Manchester for you to choose one.”
We tried a couple of new ones and settled on the Benriach 12y.o. Rich, smooth and more than a hint of the different casks, without it being too dominant.
What a lovely way to spend a while. They do tasting evenings once a month, so I will need some other excuse than a birthday to try that out.

Did any one attend Whiskey Live 2026 in London on the 27/28 February. Great event loads of different whiskies to try. Had a great time there and just wondered if anyone else was there.
i was in Dingle Ireland last June but did not find destillerie but i visited the Middleton destillery near Cork and had a special Jameson and brouth a miniature that i drinked just before boarding on cruise ship again it was a 10 day uk and Ireland cruise and booze was to pricy on board

When I was staying in Scotland a couple of years ago I came across a tiny little shop with a guy that seemed to know everything there is to know about whiskey. I’ve used him from time to time to recommend something special. This is his latest recommendation. Cask strength 59% proof. It needs a drop of water but it’s like nectar of the gods…

Can anyone recommend a good starter single malt for a beginner please. I currently drink Buffalo Trace bourbon and am intrigued to try a single malt.

For your first one I would avoid anything with a very strong feature such as peatiness etc. You could do worse than trying Glenfiddich 12 yr or The Macallan . Very drinkable, not silly money, easily available. If you like it then you can go and explore the fabulous world of single malts.
You will probably get lots of different suggestions!

I’m with Crispyduck on this and think that a Glenfiddich or Macallans would be a perfect entry point. Not the cheapest but they will both have complexity and smoothness by the bucket load!

A Highland Park 12y old would be my suggestion. Not too silly a price and a far too easy to drink dram often available on offer in supermarkets.

Agree on the Highland Park. Other smoother ones to consider Royal Lochnagar or Aberlour (1 mile upstream from the Macallam distillery but without the price premium).

Lots to think about here gents. I think a nice smooth one to start would be the order of the day. Arran 10 sounds promising. Thanks for your input.

Another recommendation for the Arran from our house - excellent value, no added colour, non chill filtered. What more could you want ( well, maybe one of it’s older brothers).
