That’s my idea of torture!

The secret is to space out the specific Christmas tunes with alot of winter themed tracks… a carol or christmas pop song once a half an hour makes it bearable and stops the ‘ can we have Now christmas 60’s hits or the Top of the Pops cover version christmas album on please’ requests from Mrs Deeg

As am I, but I still love Christmas music at Christmas. For a start, Christmastime is really the modern survivor of a midwinter festival that goes back long before Christianity at least in Northern Europe. Its value is surely mainly in people getting together and celebrating fellowship. The joy radiating from my granddaughter’s face, just sitting and looking at the Christmas tree is what it’s all about, at least to me.

And atheism does not prevent me enjoying sacred music. I would not forgo Bach’s B minor Mass, or Beethoven’s Missa Solemnise or the music of Josquin, come to that, just because it is religious. And there are so many wonderful choral groups around these days, in addition to the familiar Oxbridge choirs: the Sixteen, Tenebrae, Ora Singers to name but a few who release Christmas discs, frequently with a smattering of newly composed carols. Challenging sometimes, but so often with that special spine-tingling Christmas flavour which is absolutely part of the season to me.

I do strongly agree about the over-commercialisation, though.

Mary Gauthier’s Christmas in Paradise from Fire and Filth.
The live version on you tube is nice. Introduced to me by my look a like daughter.

I listen to sacred music all the time. My atheism has never gotten in the way of enjoying that, but it’s non-seasonal for me. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is one of my favorite works.

I confess: right now we are listening to Michael Bublè’s Christmas CD… :christmas_tree:

I’m not a huge fan of Christmas themed stuff and usually get over ruled by Mrs Pete and family.

This year we’re staying in a farm in the middle of nowhere and there won’t be much music played at all.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Likewise, we are now in Kent staying with my parents for a week, so I will not be playing any Christmas music until next year now…and that is all good by me.

‘Christmas music’ is probably better described as ‘music for Christmas’ for most of us who are indifferent to it.

Merry Music to you all.

Nice selection Mike but where is Mojo Blue Christmas to accompany your Mojo festive 15?:christmas_tree:

I’m not one to play Christmas music but I’ve wanted to listen to this for some time.

Phil Spector was a very imperfect human being, but he was a very good record producer. I think that his early 1960s LP ‘A Merry Christmas To You’ is the best Christmas record ever, bar none.

Other Christmas records (mainly singles) are available from artists as diverse as John Lennon/Yoko Ono (Merry Christmas, War Is Over’), KirstyMcColl/The Pogues (Fairytale Of New York’), Bruce Springsteen (whose’ Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ is pure joy), Mariah Carey (whose ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ was not written for me, sadly, much as I might wish otherwise), Bing Crosby even (‘I’m Dreaming Of A White Christmas’), part of the soundtrack to a film almost always shown on TV on Christmas Day.

There are many more, so take your pick.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

I have never heard of that record, nor even seen the cover, until just now. I have found Jethro Tull’s music quite variable. Is this one any good? If so, I might try to find a copy, and lay it aside until Christmas next year.

I found another on you tube seems to equate with my feelings.

Tom Waites. Silent Night. a Christmas card from a hooker in Minneapolis.

Not all of us have it easy. I always try to remember that.

I do sometimes play some Christmas music as we have a double compilation CD of it plus the Jethro Tull Christmas album and the Enya Christmas record too.
This year however I have been playing this - and really enjoying it!

Hard not to love the Beach Boys for their incredible harmonies and the fact that as I freeze away in England the Beach Boys make me think of warmer climes…

Yes we’ve had christmas music firing all morning - ranging from Bowie, Bing, Celine, Wizzard, Mathis and Slade etc

Family are now blasting out Boney M - not just christmas songs but the whole repertoire - takes me back a few decades.

Oh we have now switched to more Buble and Wham - ah well all good, tis Christmas

Merry Christmas all

PS summer has finally kicked in for Sydney- 27 degrees today

Well said.
Daughter no 1 is with her boyfriends family in South Australia - and the young Ukranian man they offered a home to last year. She sent me a great picture of him tucking into lunch.
Thank goodness for the kind people in this world - I need to reflect more and stop getting riled up by my minor niggles

No Xmas music for me. I’m working away until mid Jan; xmas eve, day and boxing day are just workings days. Same for new year. Headphones in the office with Radio Paradise, please don’t let them be playing jingle bl##dy bells all day…

I listened to the Messiah in full last night, does that count?

He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy :joy:
