WOODSTOCK,..Celebrates 50-years with Fogerty

:small_blue_diamond:Mike-B,…No Mike-B,.I agree with you.

You misunderstood me,.or so I expressed myself a little wrong in English.

:small_orange_diamond:I meant of course original Woodstock to be iconic.
But as I wrote,.that so fully manages to,as it seems, create a chaos with the Woodstock 50-Anniversary is hard to understand.

New tasks: New Woodstock becomes a Free Festival

"The festival Woodstock 50 will give away tickets to the festival for free,.it writes the site TMZ.

According to sources,.a limited number of tickets within a few days are to be released to the festival, which have had big problems since it was first announced in January.

Woodstock 50 has recently received a residency in an outdoor arena in Maryland,.where there is only room for a fraction of the giant crowd that organizer Michael Lang previously promised.

On Friday,.both Rapper Jay-Z and Rock Star John Fogerty jumped off the festival, and the organizers went out with information that all the performers were free to set their gigs on the three-day event.
How Woodstock 50 is now going to get money in order to carry out the festival 16-18 August is unclear.
According to TMZ,.VIP tickets will still be sold, but it is currently not known exactly which artists will perform."

Woodstock 50 year Tribute

A Swedish Tribute Concert To The World’s First Big Rock Festival 1969.

•MIKAEL RICKFORS.
•DAN HYLANDER.
•PY BÄCKMAN.
•LA GAYLIA FRAZIER.
•MATS RONANDER.
•CLAES YNGSTRÖM.
•CONNY BLOOM.
•JANNE ÅSTRÖM.

:small_blue_diamond:The Woodstock festival took place in August 1969,.in Bethel, about 150 km northwest of New York.
Woodstock was not only a single festival with the greatest performers at the end of the 60 century.
Woodstock meant so much more,.and that is why both the festival’s name,as well as its feeling still alive today,.50 years later.

:rose:This above is part of the Swedish Artist-elite.
Who will “Go On Tour” around Sweden with tribute-concerts to Woodstock 1969.

Below,.a little history from Woodstock 1969.

Festival

The organizers had anticipated that this would be the largest Music and Art-festival of all time, and gather an audience of up to 100.000 people.

However,.there were just over 450.000 to the festival,.and it is estimated that an additional 1.5 million were on the way but not managed to arrive.
The car queues stretched all the way to the Washington Bridge,.at Manhattan.
This,.despite being as late as four weeks before the festival,.was forced to move from the original site of Woodstock, where local politicians suddenly withdrew the permit.

The audience began arriving already the week before the festival,.and a new city emerged outside the Bethel, which then had a population of a few thousand.

3 Days of Peace & Music

The theme of the festival was 3 days of Peace & Music,.which it really became.
They managed to feed almost half a million people,.they rode out storms, children were born and all this in a harmonious environment.

Everyone was helped,.both public and festival workers, political activists, residents in the area and an infinite number of volunteers, in order to make this sudden medium-sized city work in concert.
Which it did.

The National Guard went in with helicopters, doctors and nurses established several field hospitals in the field.
300 New York police officers went up and volunteered throughout the weekend, for once unarmed.
Everyone was helped.

Music

The postwar generation had grown up with PoP and Rock’n’Roll,.but it was here the Power of Music with political and radical texts was truly established.
Folk and rock-music married in a remarkable way,.and it was not surprising that the first day of the festival was supposed to contain pure folk music.
As well as the energy of the music,.which could also in itself be a political stance…
as in Jimi Hendrix’s version of the “Star Sprangled Banner”.

Drugs

This was not a drug-free festival.
Marijuana was a part of the culture, and it was experimented with LSD and other psychedelic “mind-expanding” drugs.

Worth noting is that in hastily established field hospitals, for people who have taken bad LSD-tripper,.patients-after having been “talked down”-took care of the next person who came in, high on a “bad trip”.
And who wasn’t better at doing it than someone who’s just been there…

Artists

The organizers had managed to book some of the biggest artists 1969;
•Janis Joplin.
•Creedence Clearwater Revival.
•The Band.
•Grateful Dead.
•Johnny Winter.
•Arlo Guthrie.
•Richie Havens.
•Melanie.
•Joan Baez.
•Mountain.
•Country Joe And The Fish.
•And many,many others.

Meanwhile,.Woodstock meant the definitive breakthrough for acts such as…
:small_orange_diamond:The Who.
:small_orange_diamond:Ten Years After.
:small_orange_diamond:Santana.
:small_orange_diamond:Joe Cocker.
…artists who have since had long and incredibly fortunate careers.

Music industry

Woodstock also meant that the music-industry seriously got the eyes of the “new” rock-music.
Both in terms of record sales, but also the possibilities of making festivals.
Gigant concerts etc where the audience as well as the artists attracted to the ticket purchase.

The Film & Album

A documentary concert film was recorded during the festival,.which was released in 1970.

The film became a gigantic success, despite – or perhaps thanks to – that it was then unnaturally long,…just over three hours.
The Woodstock film is considered even this day, to be the benchmark for a real concert film.

It is also considered that it was this film that alone rescued Warner Bros…from bankruptcy…
The music was also released as a triple album (!), even the revolutionary.

It is in this day a mystery how Jimi Hendrix’s producer/sound engineer Eddie Kramer, managed to capture the mood and get to this recording with such superb sound.

Policy

Woodstock also involved a massive political manifestation,.both towards the establishment and the life style that was commanded,.but also as a gigantic protest against the ongoing Vietnam war.

•When Country Joe McDonald gets 450.000 people to rise up and sing along in “One,two, three four, what are we fighting for” in ingenious “I-Feel-Like-I ́m-Fixin-To-Die-Rag”,…it really feels like the resistance to the war is massive among young people.

Term

Woodstock has given names to several phenomena such as…

:small_blue_diamond:The Woodstock Generation,.a unifying concept for the Generation of young people who questioned the prevailing society and created an alternative culture…
Washington’s Woodstock,.Barack Obama’s installation as President.

And of course as a unifying concept for music festivals.

Woodstock 10,25,30,40 and 50 years

1979 was a Woodstock Reunion in Madison Square Garden,.New York,to celebrate the 10th anniversary.
Many of the original artists were there.

1994 was held Woodstock’ 94 in a neighboring town to Bethel.
In addition to artists from 1969 such as…
•The Band.
•Santana.
•Joe Cocker.

Younger artists such as…
•Nine Inch Nails.
•Green Day.
•Neville Brothers.
•Metallica.
•Aerosmith.
•Red Hot Chili Peppers etc,etc…

Also appeared as The big name…
•Peter Gabriel.
•Bob Dylan.
•Cranberries.
Here too,.an audience of up to 500.000 was gathered.

1999 was held Woodstock’ 99 outside New York,.even here with a massive line-up.
This festival was more commercialised,.and was visited by 400.000 people.

2009 A number of jubilee festivals were carried out all over the world under the name Woodstock’09.

In the United States,.a full Woodstock-tour was made.
Which of course also visited Bethel right next to the original location.
It was a completely Sold Out-festival with 8 hours of music,…where a large part of the artists from 1969 participated.

2019 Many Jubilee events are held around the world,.where the Swedish tour Woodstock 50 is a part.

In Bethel you make a three-day festival, including this one with a great performer…
:small_blue_diamond:But this above,.seems unfortunately to be cancelled.
What went wrong in organizing maybe we’ll find out later).

:heart:But now we look forward in Sweden to the Swedish tribute concerts for Woodstock 50.

Over and Out…

I could not wait to hear the Creedence set from the original Woodstock on Spotify and was very happy with it. It is a great live set from the band at their peak. They did not sound dated at all to me. I had all their albums in high school and college. They were a big hit around here in the late 60’s and were gone by the early 70’s. They got a lot of airplay and sold a lot of records. They had a great beat and were easy to dance to but the band had issues with each other and with their label.

I just bought the Traffic box from the same period and would love to see a Creedence box but that will never happen because John Fogerty is no Steve Winwood and he did not have the supporting players Stevie had. But Creedence were more important around here, and much easier to dance to.

The artists who impressed me the most on the Woodstock 1969 concert were Jimmy Hendrix, Santana, Janis Joplin, Sly Stone, and the Who.
Fogerty, i even didn’t know who is he, until this thread.
But not important @Peder, we have all different tastes.
I was 3 years old in 1969. But when 20, i bought the triple lp album and went 3 times to see the concert on movie with friends.

:small_blue_diamond:In August 1969,.gathered close to 500 000 people on the ground who belonged to a dairy farm in the state of New York,to listen to music.

What happened in the next three days would be much more than a concert.
It would be a legendary event that came to define an entire generation.
Through a unique archival-material,.we get to experience the music, the chaos, the mud and the community again.

:small_orange_diamond:This documentary is broadcast on Swedish TV tonight,.15 August 2019.

I was sceptical of the likely sound quality but I listened to the CCR set on Tidal yesterday, and while it was a bit hairy to start with, it ended up much better than I expected, so I have just downloaded the 96/24 from HDTracks. Thankfully they did not go in for much inter-track banter, so it’s quite’listenable’, unlike the Joan Baez set (one of my favourite voices) which is ruined by over-long inter-track chatter, no matter what the good cause being advanced.

Apologies for a ‘nudge’, but I am currently being entertained by Tim Hardin’s set at Woodstock. He may have been spaced, but some of this is the best he ever has been recorded as doing, albeit some of it is the worst.
So I’m going to buy it tomorrow, and now will try Melanie and Blood Sweat and Tears.
Amazing!

err what?

I meant that Tim’s performance was very erratic. There were some revelatory high points, but many lows.
I have subsequently listened to the Melanie set, but it seems to be afflicted by a ‘buzz’ in the left recording channel, so is not a runner.

The next BBC4 program (friday 16/17 Aug) was the Jimi Hendrix set that closed Woodstock. Digitally remastered, it is something just a little bit so special. Where why don’t we have guitar geniuses any more.?

Music/Guitarists/Society were fresh and alive in the 60’s/70’s hard to recapture that creativeness and optimism.

Yes, watched that, too!

:small_blue_diamond:@Innocent_Bystander,…It was that program about Woodstock,.which was aired on Swedish TV yesterday.
And,.I agree with you,I had also wanted to be there.

/Peder🙂

Sadly much like Tim’s life.

The Hendrix set for me was the highlight of Woodstock. Its just such a shame that after the chaos of delays through organisation & weather that he ended up playing to such a small audience on the Monday morning.
I learned through last nights BBC4 Hendrix set program that he was offered to play on the Sunday night & he refused the offer.
I have the CD (rip) of the whole set & as good as it is, its as nothing compared to watching the performance.

:small_blue_diamond:Thousands Celebrate Woodstock Jubilee.

The legendary Woodstock took place 1969,and is celebrated during the weekend in the same place.
But with far fewer visitors than the 400 000 who attended the festival when it went.

Thousands of visitors dressed in hippieinspired outfits, and with flowers in their hair have traveled to the place where the Woodstock festival took place on 15-18 August 1969.
The memory of Woodstock was celebrated with a series of concerts over the weekend.

:black_small_square:The renowned Woodstock 50 Jubilee Festival, presented as a major venture with names such as John Fogerty,Jay-Z and Miley Cyrus,.was cancelled just a few weeks ago.
The announcement did not come completely unexpectedly,.as the festival was lined by setbacks anyway since it was first announced.

Reuters News agency reports,.that a variety of events around Woodstock has been going on during the weekend.
Among other things…
Visitors have been able to buy tickets for a mini festival at Yasgur Farm,.the farmhouse that was part of the festival area.
In the nearby town of Bethel,.artists such as…
•Arlo Guthrie,.who played on Woodstock 1969…
…and…
•Ringo Starr have given concerts inside the city’s cinema.

The Reuters news agency has a reporter in place over the weekend,.which reports that visitors must pass a metal detector to get in,and then can use indoor toilets.
Something that was not possible in the area of 1969.

The 400 000 visitors caused some chaos 1969…
Anything that could go wrong went wrong.
But then it was still right…“We were filled with a kind of divine happiness”,.said the visitor Duke Devlin,77,.who Hitchhiked to Woodstock from Texas.

Many of the visitors during the Jubilee Weekend are veterans of the first Woodstock,.but even younger people with a faiblesse for 60-century music and families with children have appeared in the area.

On Saturday and Sunday…
•Santana.
and…
•John Fogerty plays.
They also performed at Woodstock 1969,.and now are back 50 years later.

This above, freely translated from Swedish to English by me.
