World Cup 2022

Ah, I remember Valkenswaaard. I lived in Veldhoven (and later in the centre of Eindhoven vlak bij de schouwburg) from the age of 6 to 12 and then many long periods in school holidays as I was at boarding school. Also Apeldoorn for a few years. My Dad worked for Philips for 35 years, eventually retiring back to the UK about 20 years ago.

Didn’t mean to cause offence.

Do you remember which division it was? I’ve early career worked for semiconductors - later nxp and medical systems. A bit at lighting and displays, but that were short assignments.

Semiconductors. He was in finance.

Small world!

Anyway, back to the football…Wales a lot better in second half. Just about deserved a draw.

Almost everybody who lived there worked for Philips at that time.
So did I. Worked for IT Network department of Philips at that time.1978-1991. Location at Boschdijk in Eindhoven where also Philips HQ was located. Nothing left of that company. All gone, you would not recognize that part of Eindhoven anymore. Sad,but that’s how things go.

But you’re right. Enough of this small sidestep. Back to football. The most important non-important thing these days.

Indeed. It’s not the same Philips anymore. It’s all about vibrators these days :joy:

Wales with a 1-1 draw against the USA they where non existent in the 1st half better in the 2nd where Bale won a penalty the Arsenal No2 Matt Turner went the right way and almost got to it but it was hit too hard.

Wales will have to play better than that to proceed. I forgot to add Wales’s main issue is there are far too many Spuds and former Spuds in their side.

:joy::joy::joy::joy:

But wrestling Mcguire to the ground is acceptable play - the issue for VAR and referees is consistency or lack of to in applying the laws of the game
but no way that was a penalty for Iran

Philips make vibrators?

How very Dutch.

Are you interested?

England certainly looked more purposeful going forward, maybe Southgate has realised he can be too conservative at times.
Bellingham was excellent - surely now a first choice for England and brings a better balance to the team than when Phillips plays alongside Rice
Defence not looking great though- McGuire not good enough and at fault for Iran’s first goal
Iran were surprisingly poor - which makes it disappointing that they managed to score 2 against us and miss a clear opportunity for a 3rd

To be honest I think it was. Stones was a bit daft.

But in comparison, the foul on Maguire should be worth two penalties

Hopefully that bang on slabhead’s head will see him sidelined and the much, much better, younger, more mobile and skilful Ben White will play against the USA.

Looks like a snazzy mouse in a saucer.

Post match Bale said they were terrible 1st half but thought they should have won it.

I don’t really understand football, perhaps that applies to most sport, beyond the simplicity of scoring/scores and sports I actually enjoy, but it still amazes me that people kicking a round ball somewhat aimlessly most of the time can be that enjoyable to watch.

Sorry, spuds?

USA looked considerably fitter and more consistent than Wales in the first and probably much of the second half, but half-time Wales changes paid off to get the draw.

Having been a rather rabid Welsh Rugby supporter in the past I find I’m more disillusioned than ever with team sports and far prefer individual sporting achievements these days irrespective of participants country of origin.

Increasingly finding all the regional/national team tribalism a bit unpleasant - probably due to commercialism/professional sporting eras eroding participation as the primary merit of such engagements.

Just about. Very lucky I’d say.
