Are familiar with most of the groups and like your list because it’s eclectic

I am not doing a list at the moment - i just want to freak everybody out by saying
it would start with the first 7 Albums by the Moody Blues - who did not get on to any ones list.

I think we have the same tastes in music in a lot of ways!

My head aches just thinking about this! I’m completely in awe of all those able to distil 25 from, in my case, almost 5,000 candidates (and I know many of you have far more).

I’m afraid I’ll just have to ‘lurk’, and garner a little listening inspiration here and there.

Sorry, it’s not a question of time, I just can’t grade to the degree of granularity that would be required! I find it almost impossible to pick my ‘favourite’ Stones, Beatles, Floyd, Crimson etc. albums, which is why I end up owning virtually all of them!

Exactly! It’s partly what drove the post; to see if you couldn’t distill such a difficult and personal thing from hundreds, if not thousands, of works into this. I think that’s why so many qualify the list by stating, ‘today’, or ‘might be different tomorrow’. The other part is curiosity…I really am interested in what everyones’ tastes are, and learn a TON along the way. There are some crazy-experienced music people on here.

This a fantastic thread and thank you for everyone who has responded with their choices so far. I am still thinking it through but will deliver the goods in due course along with the familiar caveats of others.

Great thread. After a few days consideration here’s my list:

  1. David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
  2. David Bowie - Young Americans
  3. Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
  4. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
  5. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
  6. The Clash - London Calling
  7. ELO - Out Of The Blue
  8. Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station
  9. The House Of Love - The House Of Love
  10. Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
  11. Charles Mingus - Pithecanthropus Erectus
  12. Charles Mingus - Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
  13. Pink Floyd - Animals
  14. Pink Floyd - Meddle
  15. Queen - A Night At The Opera
  16. Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street
  17. Ryan Adams - Love Is Hell
  18. Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman
  19. Bach - Goldberg Variations (Schiff)
  20. Bach - St. Matthew Passion (Gardiner)
  21. Bach - Mass in B Minor (Gardiner)
  22. Beethoven - Complete Piano Sonatas (Brendel)*
  23. Mozart Requiem (Karajan)
  24. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
  25. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

Actually I reckon that on any given day only about five of these would change - most of these are definitive in my view and would still be on the list.

*Perhaps a bit of a cheat going for the complete piano sonatas but if I had to choose just one it would be No. 29 - the mighty Hammerklavier!

Recent discovery for me this year and don’t know how it ever passed me by, rarely off the deck, knew it had to be in the 25 when it’s one of the albums I’ve bought a spare of …
