Great thread

  • Cate le Bon
  • St Vincent
  • Duffy
  • Jessye Norman

Can’t say that I disagree with the names above mentioned.
A recent discovery for me is the two ladies from Nightwish, Tarja Turunen and Floor Jansen. My goodness! Metal is absolutely not my thing, as I’m more into opera and classical. However I can recognize an outstanding vocalist when I hear one. Both ladies have impeccable classical technique, beautiful sound, and perfect command of their instrument, allowing superbly executed vocal acrobatics that you hear more on an opera stage than in a metal concert.
Highly recommended (gazillions of YouTube incredulous “react” videos on them both).

I cannot be the only person to like Cat Power surely…

Played this a couple of days ago. Always liked the track “Can’t stop the madness”, but the money I put into my system last year has certainly paid dividends, as I don’t remember the album sounding this good in the past, helped by a spin through my Clearaudio rcm before playing the LP.

Suzanne Vega, Tori Amos, Nerina Pallot and Joan Osborn

Played today, and I don’t think mentioned yet in this thread:

Edie Briskell, with the Neww Bohemians, Shooting rubberbands at the stars.

I was introduced to this via a female flatmate in shared accomodation in Newcastle upon Tyne back in about 1988. Interestingly the song Little Miss S could have been written about said flatmate, though she couldn’t see it.

I love the tonality of Edie’s voice, so suited to these songs.

For fans of the female voice I can highly recommend the album Tears of Stone by The Chieftains. Each track features a different vocalist and the recording quality is outstanding (it is one of my equipment auditioning CDs). Pick of the bunch probably The Magdalene Laundries with Joni Mitchell. And see if your system picks out the individual voices in the track featuring The Rankins.

Ella - for 60+ years.

For younger (somewhat) artists, Joni Mitchell and Cassandra Wilson spring to mind. Emmylou Harris too.
