Your Hi-Fi in strange places

I thought I’d start this as a bit of fun, I personally find having a full system in one’s bedroom a bit strange (We have a Tivoli radio as an alarm clock) but in the garage is a NAD 7225PE receiver and a pair of Realistic Minimus 7 speakers.

This gets a lot of use when I’m pottering in there, be it wielding a soldering iron or making sawdust.

The speakers were picked up with a matching Realistic SA-10 amplifier which despite a power output in the milliwatt range, could at low volume drive them better than the NAD! It turns out this was due to a sneaky variable loudness curve built into the volume control. I still have that amp somewhere…

Anyway, let’s see what you have in your shed, attic, basement, caravan etc.

We have a typical NYC high rise apartment. No unusual spaces. Our system is in our LR. Racks at the opposite end of the room from speakers. The LR opens into a dining area. I often sit and listen from there, rather than the traditional place on the sofa. Oddly enough my brain seems to compensate. That is as “unusual” as we can get. We have a second bedroom that is my office but is not conducive for a system.

Decades ago, for a few weeks between sale of one house and purchase of another, my wife and I moved into my former childhood bedroom in my parents’ house, effectively as a bedsit. The room was 12ft square, with wardrobes built into the alcoves each side of the chimney breast, tops of the wardrobes about 18” below the 9ft high ceiling. I put my IMF TLS50ii (not insubstantial) speakers on their sides on top of the wardrobes, as it was inconceivable to be without my hifi. I wax surprised at how good it sounded, though being a 1930s semi high level or late night playing was out of the question.

Another unusual hifi placement, and one that was rather wonderful and I wish I could do permanently, was on the occasion of my half century birthday party, when I put my speakers on the patio at the far end of my garden - details here: https://community.naimaudio.com/t/whats-the-best-sounding-system-youve-ever-heard/11188/25

I use a variety of kit in my workshop, most often though is the Arcam Delta 80 and 90. The Delta 80 gives me radio, and the Delta 90 is a super flexible amplifier that will drive most speakers and works with just about anything you wish to hook up to it, so very useful for testing and evaluating kit. Even the phono stage is decent and MC too.
