500 Series vs. Statement?

Do you have Clapton unplugged? That’s an awesome live album.

Yes. I have it on CD and also an audiophile LP which I haven’t gotten around to yet. I agree that it is a really good live album. Lot’s of fun. I think you talked me into playing it tomorrow.

Try Word of Mouth by Jaco Pastorius if you are into jazz/rock, the horn arrangements will sound so clear through those speakers!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m not familiar with that piece but I will check it out.

@Mitch, my congratulation to your Statement installation! It is looking amazing. Good to hear that everything went well as expected.

To be honest it is quite weird: In the middle of your speakers even the three statement pillars look quite small. Unbelievable. What a stunning setup?!

I wish you much fun and endless hours of pure enjoyment with your extra ordinary setup and with the statement in the center of your system!

And of course we would love to get some more impressions and experiences from time to time. One important and entertaining questions would be: What kind of Singe Malt and what albums are a perfect pairing with each other and with your statement?

Thanks, cheers and regards

Thank you colormind. It’s funny you should mention the concept of pairing single malts with particular music. This is something I have seriously considered, even to the point of hosting a proper tasting event. I need to still formalize my thoughts but it is a topic to which I will return. Honestly, I was just thinking about this last night while sipping a bit of Balvenie 17 Doublewood, a well balanced, sherried whisky, both sweet in the mouth and dry in the finish. I was thinking how well it would pair with Fleetwood Mac as Stevie Nicks excoriates Lindsey Buckingham in “Dreams”.

I was thinking of starting a new thread pairing scotch and music. It could be a ton of fun!!!

Cheesy… :smirk:

Not cheesy…

Do either of you @PeterR @Charlie think you will upgrade to NAP S1 too? Would assume peter is more likely as charlie has put a lot of effort into his active system.

@georgeeldridge
Never say never, but certainly not at the moment.
It still would be an enormous outlay even if I traded all my 500s and all my fraims. I can’t see how to stretch that far and the sonic benefit may not be so earth shattering. Going back passive would also require to bring back the passive crossovers which are a bottleneck at least wirh DBLs. But then the choice for other speakers would open up …and the chase never stops :see_no_evil:

Hi George, it’s a good question and of course something, which has been playing on my mind . Even taking the outlay aside I actually feel, that for me it would be a step too far. As you may be aware I’ve spent an awful lot of energy on my room treatment. My room is teetering on a knife edge tbh. and in some way even having introduced the Nac S1 into my 500 system, I am aware how little ‘more’ it would take to upset the balance, and as usual we are talking low frequency pressure here. The S1 pre delivers an increased bandwidth in this respect ie a fuller bass output, and even though it is well resolved- it is very much there!
My listening level is usually quite high, on a few low output recordings ( Mobile Fidelity offerings I can be 80% up on the S1 scale ( maybe it should be The open Richter Scale :joy:)).
I don’t know how much that equates to in Decibel, but I guess it is just believably loud enough to suit the musical venue for me. I want it to sound as if the musical artists are literally in the room or an extension thereof sound stage wise.
So in short it’s a no from me, as I simply cannot push my 3.5x6.0 metres room any further nor my finances as an OAP for that matter.
I am actually loving it as is, so realistically the 35 year journey has finally finished for me, something my wife I believe is also very happy about tbh.!

Peter…I had nearly the exact same limitations and concerns as you. and now I own a full Statement. Somehow, I’ll just have to figure out how to make it all work!
