Cricket

So another leftie who doesn’t spin the ball in the King of Spain tradition and a Surrey cast-off …hmmm the cupboard is bare.

Whatever happened to Surrey’s Virdi- saw him a few years back at Essex and he bowled long spells with control, variation and no little spin. We all thought then that him and (assuming he got his head together) elder statesman Monty would be a great twosome.

Difficult to pin point where we go wrong with spinners.
Monty looked the real deal and it’s very sad how it all ended.
It must go back to the type of pitches we play county cricket on and how little the longer form is played in domestic first class cricket.
It’ll be interesting to see how the novices perform on what most probably will be pitches better suited to spin than they are used to.

I am happy to see them get a chance (assuming they play). Look at the top Test teams playing outside England and they all have good spin resources at present. Leach is OK but is ageing, it would be great to see some other options and types of slow bowlers available at both Test, and white ball level.

England showing some consistency in the WI.

Having a quiet day after last nights excitement thankfully the first test of the Aussie summer starts against Pakistan. Aussies won the toss and are batting.

Good to Nathan Lyons back in the test side.

Following online whilst on night shift. Good start for the Aussies.

Helped by some poor bowling and fielding.

England playing with 5 spinners available. Didn’t know we had that many. Lol.

Still consistent.

Me thinks some bowlers (inc SC) need to rein-back on their variations and ask themselves why they were successful in the first place. Problem is that once they lose their youthful pace, they settle in to be no more than quick medium at this level. In some of the BBL games you can see the batsmen awaiting the constant diet of slower balls and (supposed) cutters.

IPL auction tomorrow.

467 runs in 40 overs. Cricket, or just slogging contest? Discuss.

White ball slogging, just like the BBL I watched a few days back. No pitch movement to worry about, no swing, just stand and deliver stuff. It’s become akin to baseball IMHO – and it gets boring to watch.

In the SA/India match a few days back, India got the ball to move and swing – result SA were something like 50-6 in an ODI. It kinda speaks to me, as many journos have highlighted, it’s not fair cricket, and when conditions aren’t ideal for batting, teams cannot fathom a way to make a decent score.

I used to open the bowling – and I would be thinking ‘what’s the point’!! But that’s not to detract from the much-enhanced skills of the batsmen nowadays.

The England cricket team should take up baseball or rounders instead, as that may be their only chance of winning a bat and ball game ever again.

(Don’t blame me, I was born just down the road from where they make those LP12 thingies.)
