It was Dylan songs I was thinking of when I mentioned Fairport and Sandy Denny. Even Manfred Mann and The Mighty Quinn.
In that vein, Caroline Chocolate Drops (Rhiannon Giddens) and Why Don’t You Do Right.
With UK traditional /folk the MainlyNorfolk website is a good resource.
Thanks for the direction - I stumbled on them yesterday whilst sorting out crazy man Michael…
Thanks … any preference?

Not heard the Cyrus but agree about the Peyroux.
Lots of great covers on this album:
The Humpback Whale is terrific.
Miss Kittin [ cover version of REM ‘Everybody Hurts’ ]
I really like the Esbjörn Svensson Trio’s version of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Face of Love’. It’s on the Susie Soho album.
Petra Haden - I can see for miles
Siouxsie & the Banshees cover of “Dear Prudence” originally by The Beatles
Kirsty MacColl cover of “A New England” originally by Billy Bragg
Johnny Cash cover of “Hurt” originally by Nine Inch Nails
The Sundays cover of “Wild Horses” originally by The Rolling Stones
Soft Cell cover of “Tainted Love” originally by Gloria Jones
Bjork cover of “Its oh so quiet” originally by Betty Hutton
Nomination for best ever cover:
This Mortal Coil cover of “Song to the Siren” originally by Tim Buckley
Nomination for worst ever cover:
Andrea Corr cover of “Tinseltown in the Rain”
originally by The Blue Nile
I think this could run and run as I go through my collection.
Thing is, with the folk tradition so many songs pass aurally, tunes turn up to more than one set of lyrics.
And of course it is not all finger in the ere ole wailing.
A recent purchase by a folk artist is rather more like easy listening, full of alternative covers
As a contrast, try the same artist Out The Gap where there is collaboration with reggae bassist and producer Dennis Bovell.
Cathy Berberian, Revolution, Beatles Arias. Classic, Help!
B.E.F.’s Music of Quality and Distinction Volume 1 is a veritable treasure trove of superb cover versions.
Joe Cocker’s version of the Beatles “With a little help from my friends” takes a bit of beating for a cover.
Turns a limp Beatles tune into something special.
Not a cover as such, but the original played 800 times slower…
Makes this an ambient epic…
Although the most epic has got to be this one…
I’d suggest:
Nirvana’s cover of Bowie’s The Man Who Sold The World on Unplugged in New York
Lizz Wright’s cover of Led Zeppelin’s Thank You on The Orchard
and
Aynsley Lister’s cover of Hendrix’s Little Wing on Everything I Need
I am a big fan of both Bob Dylan and John Prine (whom I am looking forward to see once again later this year), but they both have voices that could be labelled as ‘an acquired taste’, and so from time to time I very much enjoy listening to good covers of their songs.
A couple of examples are:
- an eclectic and very atmospheric collection of John Prine covers by Jeffrey Foucault.
and
“Slackin’ on Dylan” by Stephen Inglis - a very talented guitarist and singer from Hawaii.
