Okay - spinning Selling England. At the same time I recognise self-indulgence and brilliance.
But elevator must be musical
I think you should try at least two - one under Peter Gabriel and another under Phil Collins. How about And Then There Were Three which I think marked the transition after PG moved on to pastures new.
Peter
‘A trick of the tail’ was the first album with Phil Collins on vocals. ‘And then there were three’ was the first album without Hacket, with only Banks, Rutherford and Collins remaining.
How do you know he’s dissing them.
Maybe they have some top notch elevator music in France. ![]()
Totally agree with you!!
Same here, there are many talented musicians who crop up time after time but have little appeal to me personally, though if others get enjoyment from them that’s fantastic.
Music is a bit like literature and art - while I’d like to feel I have a broad understanding of it, there will be plenty of classic books or artworks that simply don’t resonate no matter how famous they are.
I find very often I listen to recommendations and am underwhelmed simply as that genre is not my thing no matter the technical skills on display.
It would be pretty boring if we all liked everything.
In the interest of fairness, I’ve just tried once more to listen to a Genesis album all the way through.
Up first, Selling England By The Pound. The first track is vile. The Wardrobe song is OK until they ruin it with gibberish about being a lawnmower. Firth of Fifth starts with some pleasant if unremarkable piano, but the headphones are torn off at 1:07. Enough.
Up next, A Trick Of The Tail. Skip, skip, eject. That was 10 minutes I’ll never get back.
What does this prove? Two things: first, it’s all completely subjective; second, Genesis are absolute rowlocks.
Rowlocks? Google translate couldn’t explain me.
Rowlocks are the things that keep your oars in place and against which you pivot the oar when rowing…
I suspect it’s a word that rhymes with ‘bollocks’ which can be taken to mean rubbish.
Oops! Clearly no expert on things Genesis.
Peter
Though, SEBTP is probably my favourite Genesis album. Enough to make a fish choke on water!
I understand your incredulity - after all, the description implies that it is indeed music! ![]()
I was thinking of that, but wasn’t sure.
I just finished season 2 of “ la trêve “, Belgian Netflix serial. Delightful. I am quite sure you will enjoy. The Break in Netflix uk.
trick of the tail is a good place to start as mentioned
you’d only need about 5 listens to get it or not
thanks for the open mind to discover new amazing tunes
That’s Mk 2 Genesis. The earlier Gabriel years were better in my view, with the final album The lamb lies down on Broadway their pinnacle, so I suggest that is a better place for someone to start - or after Trick if they go there fire and don’t like it.
For anyone liking more folkey style music, their first album From Genesis to Revelation is quite different from the later music (thiugh not folk despite my ‘more folkey’ description.
Harsh…very harsh.
Better or worse than being consigned to the elevator?
