How many music streaming services are you subscribed to?

That can indeed be very annoying. I have been burned several times by that.

Qobuz, Apple Music, Tidal, and Spotify.

'Cuz I just can’t get enough, just can’t get enough.

Since 2019, I’ve been using a TIDAL Family subscription in combination with my Roon lifetime license. The reasons for this are obvious. Roon only supports TIDAL and Qobuz. And my family and my best friend also benefit from this subscription.

Years ago I have tried various test subscriptions for Deezer, Amazon Music and Spotify. Sound quality was always disappointing, library best case similar but mostly worse compared to TIDAL. And this is also a very important reason for TIDAL, the payment terms to the artists are more fair as e.g. the payment terms by Spotify.

But back to personal listening preferences. Most albums and tracks are stored locally on my Roon Server as CD-Rips for home listening. Roon ARC is the perfect solution to keep my complete library (36k songs) always with me. And TIDAL is just an addition for discovering new music. If I really like an album I’m trying to buy the vinyl or CD.

I think for most productions they will be the same streaming compatible masters from the publisher/distributor.

Certainly in my experience.

Apple Music (Part of Apple One) Family, Home & Mobile.

Qobuz for HiFi setup.

Note

Apple Music has TuneIn, iHeartRadio & Audacy built in. Qubuz, Tidal, & Spotify don’t unless something has changed

A few of my fav radio stations that I can access on Apple Music.

Mixed economy here: local and streaming. For the latter, Qobuz fits the bill for me but I’ll buy downloads of stuff that’s not on the service, often from Bandcamp. If I find I’m playing the same album a lot I’ll buy a download as a thank you to the artists.

90% of my listening is via TIDAl but I also have Apple Music (mainly for the family) and I’ve also got Spotify but I hardly ever use that.

Hi all.

I went down the Qobuz route then treated myself to Tidal as well. I found that i wasn’t using them very much to justify the cost, so cancelled em!

We have or make that ā€œi payā€ for Spotify for the family! Occasionally I’ll take a listen. I do like the user interface and really enjoy my ā€œShazamā€ playlist that i have built up over the years. To be fair i don’t use Spotify very much only really to explore new music that i then purchase. I still enjoy buying and owning the CD i have brought and then it gets ripped. We also have Apple music with Apple One subscription which i don’t think anyone in my family uses.

I do enjoy listening to my ā€œvastā€ ripped music collection when at home, which i have far too much!

I do feel that radio is in a very healthy ā€œconditionā€ in the 21st Century with such a vast selection. I do tend to listen in the car to radio through the Naim app. This tends to be a mixture of dance music, Boom radio (luv me some Mr Horn!!! on the drive home!) and or Serenade if i just wanna chill and relax. If I’m at home I’ll listen to Radio Paradise Mellow.

Think i went a tad off topic, sorry! But you gets me thoughts!!!

Good job your name isn’t Dylan.

Interesting reading about others’ choices.

I am on TIDAL only. I listen to classical and jazz. Zero rock or anything else. TIDAL seems to have almost, but not all of, everything I search for. I can also use TIDAL via its app on my iPhone, iPad, and Watch (the latter with earplugs when out running).

The survey suggests that I am in a minority with TIDAL instead of Qobuz. At least there is an alternative should TIDAL go out of business.

If Apple Music allowed its Lossless service to run on Naim kit I’d probably change as that is the product least likely to fold.

I have tended to move with the times - which is not being critical of anyone or anything - so I got rid of my gramophone records in the 80s when CD was established and then of my CDs more recently now that streaming is so good. I struggled to give them away, in fact. They are pretty much worthless now.

I now own no physical music carriers so have no need for shelves for them or things to play them on. I miss the sleeve notes and booklets but everything is easily available online. Most of all I love being able to listen to almost anything almost instantly, without buying a physical item that I may not like.

All jokes aside,

I have Apple Music as it’s part of the One bundle (and Mrs F uses it)

Spotify was the first music service I subscribed to and have built a ton of playlists, and I really like the UI/UX

Tidal was the ā€˜hi-fi’ solution for my 1st gen green-screen streamers (which I have three of)

And Qobuz was a trial to see if I could get better SQ from said streamers.

It’s cheaper than a debilitating drug habit, so I’m ok w it.

Just Qobuz. Like many others I use Cds and vinyl from my own collection mainly (with all Cds available as Flac so I don’t always need to go hunting for them).

Use Qobuz for finding new material, although sadly the ratio of ā€˜good new’ to ā€˜not so good’ is frustratingly in the wrong direction - or maybe I’m just a grumpy old man??

None!

Listening to a music streaming service, irrespective of your own collection size, enables you to listen to new artistes / genes before making the decision to buy or download your own copy, something we couldn’t do in the past, unless your mate owned a copy. Its certainly stopped me from buying blind.

I’m been subscribed to Qobuz for a few months now, I used the free trial month and decided it was worth subscribing to since I’ve now got a streamer in a Uniti Atom HE. In the past I’ve also had Spotify for a maybe a month or two.

Just Qobuz. What else am I missing? Sounds superb through my nova and nss333. Very happy.

Meant to add: if Presto were available directly through my streamer I’d probably subscribe to that as well.

Fully agree, wise choice indeed!

My wife uses Spotify on her phone and in her car. I use Presto on my phone and on my Nova. Neither of us ever uses the other’s service (I pay for both of them of course!)
