Mains Blocks and Mains extensions

Naim use MK double sockets for shows so must be good enough. :+1:t2:

Isn’t this just one of a gazzilion shows picture that has been around since ~1995 which could be a distributor/retailer as well? I’m not so sure this is how it looks when Naim do shows in general

They are very poor. Out of the last batch I bought, half of them were unusable due to manufacturing defects.

It was a Naim show and the biggest clue is it’s sitting on a plethora of Powerlines on Naim Fraim bases.
Unless other companies have lots of these lying about.
Here is the un cropped pic

Our unswitched Crabtree double socket must be well over 20 years old now. The were still UK made and of very high quality and were the go-to socket for dedicated mains at the time. It’s a shame when quality suffers but very often low price seems to mean far more than decent quality.

I think most if the good old manufacturers are going the similar way Crabtree used to be great but are frowned on in the trade now.
Worst I’ve ever used is Volex not by my choice but a customer.

I see where ChrisSU is coming from, a number of years ago I replaced all the crappy 13A sockets around the house with MK Logic Plus. These were all UK made, some with the original copper palletress box earth links, some with the galvanized steel link bars. They have been 100% faultless. However I replaced some bedroom single outlets with doubles & these were Malasian made & although no faults, they left me less impressed.
The next MK Logic Plus iteration is the ā€œRapid Fixā€ that utilises screwless cage clamp connections.

Those are crap indeed and I don’t like the idea. :scream:
I use this type with proper terminals.

Looks like they’re using Wago’s (or a similar alternative) set into sockets now, I didn’t know that was happening….makes sense though.
Any Sparkie in the UK on a new build, renovation or alterations will be using Wago connectors where joints are required…I think all JB’s now are Wago based internally……

I was initially a bit unsure of Wago connectors when they first appeared years back re just how solid a connection they make, but when they have a proper grip, they are sound to the point of not letting go of a stripped end even with a good hard pull….

I had become aware of this from various comments on the forum.

Jesuitically - I did specify ā€œrecent AND decentā€ - a Venn intersection of apparently zero population.

I agree, for normal new build & etc ring mains.
I do see a problem with peeps on the forum with DIY projects using various sizes of flex cable & for dedicated A/V circuits with 6mm & 10mm T&E or other specialist cables.

Yeah, that’s a fair point….
Though to be honest, if your skill set is that low you’re just as likely to muller a screw bind terminal….! I’ve seen shocking (sorry!) examples on site/installs even from ā€˜Sparkies’….:flushed:

I got 2 x mcru main extension blocks on sale from their eBay page. These ones didn’t have any filtering, just good wiring and connections. Working fine now and sounds fine. :+1:

@Mike-B
I haven’t come across those and I look in disbelief.
I hope you don’t have these.
I’ll be sure to add the proper MK part number in future for recommendations.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. :+1:t2:
The ones that I and I assume Naim use too.

I also mentioned mentioning it before it was fashionable to mention mentioning.

Dull - aren’t I?

No I don’t have any.
They have been around for some time.
They do have advantages over simple screw type terminals, (one of your favourite peeves I believe) is the screw rotation cuts and distorts copper and can result in connection degradation. Hence why Furutech terms are screwed clamp designs.
The Wago type uses only pressure & actually has a greater contact area along a longer length of stripped cable.
Plus it is BS compliant …

Thanks for that.
If I’m using Multistrand into screw terminals I always use Ferrules to stop the splitting.
I’m a bit OCD Powerline termination in the ends could do with ferrules too
Oops there goes another free tip.

Marbos are so last century. You need a Bussmann.

You’re right that’s not my Powerline I just showed the rubbish termination.
Bussmann lives here but only 13A when used in the proper rating of cable.
Safety first. :+1:t2:

Yes they have an incredibly strong grip. Wasn’t sure about them before trying them, you have to pull and twist really hard to remove the wires. You can’t use multi stranded cable in them … so no ā€˜audiophile’ () wires, just single or 6 core.
