We streamed this last night. An eccentric comic gem from New Zealand.

In no particular order and without repeating some of the (excellent) previous contributions;

Out of Africa
Reservoir Dogs
Schindler’s List
The English Patient
Inglorious Basterds
Forrest Gump
The Apartment
Sophie’s Choice
All quiet on the Western Front
Shawshank Redemption
Django Unchained
Gandhi
The Deer Hunter
A Beautiful Mind
French Connection
The Dirty Dozen
The Pianist
Jean de Florette / Manon des Sources
The Departed
Casablanca
Bridge on the River Kwai
Saving Private Ryan
Midnight Cowboy
One flew over the cuckoo’s nest
Rain Man

Most of these got the “Best Picture” Oscar - I used to collect them in the days of VHS. There are so many films to choose from, but these are just a subset of my “outstanding films” and I’d love to know how I could access them (at will) again …

The Square. A recent dark comedy from Denmark (most of it in English) taking a satirical look at the world of Art Galleries. There is one fantastisk scene that lasts about 15-20 that is quite frankly brilliant…all at once being funny and unnerving. Check out the trailer to get a taste of what to expect.

Paris

Featuring the divine Miss Nastassja Kinski and a superb Ry Cooder soundtrack.

And I’d add Blade Runner 2049 which IMO was damn near as good as the original. Wasn’t sure after the first viewing at the cinema but got the 4K Bluray and after a couple more goes I was hooked.

Couldn’t agree me - v underrated film

Off the top of my head and in no particular order;

The Duellists - 1977 Ridley Scott
Alien - 1979 Ridley Scott
Excalibur - 1981 John Boorman
Aliens - 1986 James Cameron
Gladiator - 2000 Ridley Scott
The Martian - 2015 Ridley Scott

I didn’t intend to come off like a Ridley Scott fanboy but hey, what can I say?

Also, pretty much anything from Studio Ghibli

Tetsuo: Iron Man and Tetsuo 2: Body Hammer.

For those that like their films dark, weird and totally off the wall from director Shinya Tsukamoto, (1989). I saw these when I was studying Architecture at University in the 90’s and they were recommended by a film student friend.

A low budget mash up bringing in influences from Manga, Cyber Punk, Horror, Humour and just about everything…even love. Basically the storey is about a man who experiments with biomechanics on himself and the film follows his transformation. The films have become a cult amongst the Art Scene and the experimental techno music is pretty good. It’s probably less Horror more weird/off the wall.

Obviously not for everyone, but one or two of you out there in Naim land will like them.

NOTE: Maybe there should be a category called, “Must See Movies…for Some Of You”.

We watched this last night, based on your recommendation – and because we loved Force Majeure. That scene with Igor is disturbing. What a terrific, odd movie! I’m still trying to get my head around it.
