Naim CDX 2.2 needs love

I’m very sorry to hear this. Truly an epic player.

Ouch,.

I am still keeping my fingers crossed for my CDX 2.2 , if it goes then most likely an AudioLab transport will replace it

@Ian2001 I will admit that ‘I have in passing’ been looking at transports! Audiolab look nice - black and simple. I have a nDAC+XPS DR, so logically should use a transport. But nothing compares to the design purity of an all Naim Stack.. I am still in mourning :cherry_blossom:. I guess, I should change my profile!!!

I would love to hear about its sound from folks who are using the CD5SI - Naim’s current CD player.

I did find a distraction - testing a new Streaming setup. For the past year, I built a setup similar to @Riko using a Mac/USB—Spdif converter—NDAC.

Then, I stumbled upon a post on the Holo Audio Red. The Holo Red, in my setup, is a night and day difference! Wow - very 3 dimensional. Highly recommended!

I had a CD5si, and went back to my CDX 2, I appreciate it has a limited life .

The AuDioLab 9000 looks like a good replacement, or as I have a Nait50, a Gold Note would sit along side it nicely :ok_hand:I could use this as a transport or if funds are tight- a Shanlin

That is a real shame. I was really hoping you would find a useable mech to get it going again and then share your source. What are you going to do with the CDX2.2 now?

The nDAC is quite sensitive to source quality over S/PDIF. This is something we’ve found and which has been much discussed on the forum.

Obviously the Holo Red DDC is providing a nice clean feed :+1: it gets good reviews.

It doesn’t appear to support FLAC files?

Good to know about your experience on a CD5si. My dealer also advised something similar - to look for a transport. I hadn’t heard about Gold Note! Seems nice looking for a simple black box. I like the front loading tray - it’ll slot in nicely into my rack!

Thanks @MarkL3w . CDX2.2 is at the repair shop, hoping for resuscitation…low/no hopes. Hence the Holo to ease the pain!

I am fairly new to streaming. After experimenting with Tidal and Qobuz - I liked the sound of Qobuz - which Red streams perfectly.

Twittering machines did a nice review of the Holo Red. They compared it against Mola Tambaqui’s streamer playing Arooj Aftab’s Night Reign - which is my current fav album. That convinced me!

This Holo Red looks quite interesting. I see that it’s RPi based, so similar to my Allo “Signature” streamer (which feeds my nDAC/XPS via DC-1). And the documentation implies that it will run MoOde Audio software (like the Allo).

So could be a “drop in” replacement, in the event that the Allo dies!

It looks very nice and tempting and the reviews are good. There are a number of very good European offerings though like the Primare np streamer or the Cambridge mxn10. I did choose the last one also because I consider Cambridge a more reliable company against a Chinese promise.

Yes, Primare and Cambridge Audio are very reputable brands. I was quite keen on listening to the EXN100, but didn’t want a mismatched color stack  . What did I know - I now have a red color Holo :joy: .

On a positive note, @Richard.Dane and @NeilS - you might be please to know - the CDX2 is repaired and on its way back to me! The hairline crack on the platter was the issue and apparently the player is working. It’s in transit. I’ll post updates!!!

After I heard the news on Friday, I got inspired to work on the cabinet / new home for the audio; I’ve been rebuilding my 1980s cabinet. The 3 middle drawers were pulled out and after a lot of back breaking work and polishing - black on black- top shelf awaits the CDX2 . Cheers!!!

Hi @Gazza my CDX2.2 was microskipping random bits of music - I am talking micro second - enough to perceive - but not to totally distract. Per Richard - I tried a soak cycle on a brand new disc (run time of 1 hr) and after 4 hours - there were multiple errors (magically not in the first hour). Per NeilS, I reached out to Naim North America, and they predicted multiple scenarios, listed below.

  1. Cracked platter: replacement with a like.
  2. Transport Alignment : send unit to Naim North America service.
  3. Laser aging : no longer officially supported.
  4. Servo calibration and Transport health

I got lucky with the first one, once replaced - it’s completing the soak cycle without any errors. Followed @NeilS posting from June 2022 CDX2 issue - #3 by NeilS …and voila - the CDX2 is running soak cycles without errors…super lucky.

Many thanks to Richard and NeilS and others for keeping this forum active and leading me in the right direction. :folded_hands:t3:
