Hope to start looking at this project early next year, but may hunt down components as they come up. I may consider the Linn Sara, but it really depends upon the room. I actually have a pair of Celestion SL6s, so could try them out!
I remember some years back I bought an old Naim system from a chap who lived in the East End. It was a late CB NAC62 and NAP90. The source was an old NAD CD player and cassette deck, and the speakers were early examples of the Celestion SL6. He played me a few tracks and initially I was a bit concerned that the system had a fault, so poor was the sound. It seemed to have no top end, which was not so much of an issue, but more seriously there was no sense of life to it. I put it down to the music and recording. The price was keen and the condition of the two Naims, while very dusty, seemed to be very good underneath, so I took a chance and bought them.
Getting it all home and cleaned up I realised that the 62 and 90 were fine, in fact in really great health and sounding just lovely (admittedly the NAC62 was the star, especially when I substituted a NAP110 for the NAP90). What was letting it all down was the CD player, but especially the speakers. Iâd heard SL6s before of course, and all the systems in which they had played had never really floated my boat. These one just confirmed that for me. They are very different to a speaker like the Sara - almost their opposite.
This is why speakers are more perhaps than any bit of HiFi kit in my view a personal choice and you have to listen with your ears and choose by listening rather than reviews/advice.
Back in the day I really liked the Celestion SL6 ( I didnât own any I was more of a Mission buyer in those days with some 770s) although I donât think I ever heard them with Naim amps. even though the HiFi shop I worked in was a dealer for both brands.
Been years (30+!!) since I have heard the SL6, just checked mine (they are in the attic room) and they are SL6Ss which I gather are a kinder load than the original SL6, which need some serious power (current) eg. an amp like my Krell KSA100 to start to show some life. Will certainly try them as a matter of interest when the time comes, but for this project the Sara may be the favourite, if the room is right?
Just flash a bit of chrome and weâre all happy on this thread
I have a connection question,
I know that this crossover works vertically in bi amp,
Can I use it horizontal if I had some connections made up, 2 into 1
HF1 and HF2 into one lead
LF1 and LF2 into another
Many thanks
Yes you send it to Naim or Class A who can resolder it,but even better if you find two identical power amps and keep it as it is.
Donât wanna re wire,
You might get moderated for saying that,
Thatâs why I thought about leads,
If I got another 160 it probably wonât sound identical to the one I got already
so left and right might be different
I donât really know,
Canât afford to send 2 amps off to be matched up as a pair,
Sorry I meant ,send it to Naim to resolder it
I have had many not totally matched Naim amps in active systemsâŚI would say try it before changing the Naxo.
Active Nap 160âs are fabulous!
You should have Naim active leads to the Nap 160âs
Itâs a semi-approved mod, so I allow it. Only issue really is the labelling as any subsequent owner might not knowâŚ
Would leads work as mentioned above,
Wanna leave it as is,
Semi approved mod or not,
Thanks
Remember that you need the Naim active leads
,made of the same kind of cable as a Nap 250 interconnect cable
Yes, if using amps smaller than a NAP250 youâll want Naim active leads as the SNAICs can be too capacitive which can make the NAXO unstable.
Anyone got any pics of 4 pin/4pin active leads For naxo 2-4 please,
Thanks
They look like 4-4 pin Snaic, with a thin black cable, the same cable as a Nap 250 interconnect
See the picture of the DIN-XLR and the notes below - the active lead looks the same, just with a DIN4 at both ends.
