Nap 500DR run in

Of course if you buy an existing green logo 552 the sexy remote control illuminates in green until you switch to pre or tuner mode when the button switches to white, you can have it all ways!

No want to buy. Just wanted to ask if the 500 dr have received some modifications recently, apart the white logo. Richard responded me.

I’m still running NAC5 but I did hear a friends DBL’s with Superlumina. They were super detailed but I’m not a 100% sure I preferred them. The one problem with DBL’s is the cross-overs. They are still wired with NAC5 and I don’t believe you can have them re-wired with SL. Not necessarily a problem with other speakers of course but I think you have to be a bit careful. Another friend has Ovator 800’s and they sound glorious but then they were voiced for this combination. I think speaker age might play a big part in which of the two (SL vs. NAC5) will sound best.

I tip I learnt from my dealer is that speakers will often require repositioning after an amp change. With 135’s I had the DBL’s very close to the wall with about 2cm of toe-in. With the 500 this shifted to double the distance from the rear wall with 1/2cm of toe-in. Don’t underestimate the effect this can have. I’d play around with speaker position before considering cable changes as it may be all you need!

Happy listening.

Just an update,

The 500DR has now settled in. There is more warmth to the sound and the treble is so sweet. The sound is superbly articulate, powerful, fast and musical. It’s everything I could have ever wanted. I have heard so many systems in the past few years ranging from 10k to over 100k and I can’t remember ever being as impressed as I am with my system. Having typed that I’ve realised my spdif transport, DAC and amp-speakers are actually north of 60k. lol.

I’m so pleased with my system now. I don’t think I’ll ever buy another amp ever again. Everybody should have a NAP 500. It’s that good.

I second that… If NAP500 doesn’t sound good for one’s ear, I don’t know what would :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I have been following this informative, entertaining and generally good-natured thread for a while now.
I am working out best prices on the open market for any organs I can live without!
There seem to be some veritable bargains out there currently, which I hope don’t all get snapped up before I get the necessary funds!!

I agree. Have really enjoyed the thread.

Raising my shelf height the other night and had to power everything down for an hour or two. Had to unplug a couple of cables. Would say it took two days for everything to sound ok again. Panicked for a while but the bliss eventually returned.

Honestly I couldn’t recommend it more. I absolutely love the NAP 135s-I’m actually going to build a second system around them but the 500 is what I would describe as the perfect amp.

I liked the comment @HAS made. I will put it another way. If you don’t like the sound of the 500, hifi isn’t for you. :grimacing:

Merry Xmas everyone. :christmas_tree:

It really needs a ND555 with twin power supplies to be it’s best though……

I will eventually get there  No hurry though.

Having heard a NAP500DR behind a Statement Pre-S1 driving some PMC FACT 12s, you really wouldn’t want for another power amp. The key is 'speaker matching IMV.

Bargain !

Just had a look around. There are some nice 500 DRs out there competitively priced relative to the 350s - just saying :slightly_smiling_face:

Were the Furutech power cables new or fully run in when you used them with the 552 and 500?

In my experience, and from what I’ve read, Furutech power cable and Furutech sockets, plugs and connectors take months to run in from new.

No I had them made about 4 months ago. I’ve been using them ever since. This is just a hunch but I think they still have some running in to do. The rhodium used takes an age to burn in or so I’ve read many many times. They exhibit a slight edginess to the sound until this settles. Again this is what users have reported on many forums.

What I have noticed though is that every time I move the cables they don’t sound right for a few days. Bear in mind these are pretty thick cables and when their shape is changed, the thick strand metal is being bent.

Those two cables could be the main reason why it’s taking so long for the system to run in.
