New Firmware update v. 3.6.0

Streaming Audio

Agree the bass is in a better control and drums also three dimensions …but lack for me sharpness I had before

Updated my Nova and since the update I have had issues with it. When I turn on the Nova the sound doesn’t get to the speakers. The Nova is definitely on the right chanel. I have had to reset it twice and it works but then the issue comes up again. Really bizarre.

Agree an unfortunate drop in sparkle… on ND5xs2. Sort of drop that makes me want to try a chord DAC now. Pity as in all other respects fine.

But Meni doesn’t feel that anymore apparently…maybe wait a bit ?

Hi Clare

I have an iphone w new ios and cannot see nd555. Other devices w older ios can see it.

I deleted the app, restarted the nd555, nothing helped.

Kindly advice what I should do

Many thanks
Lars

Hi Lars. Did you do a full power down of the ND555 (ie unplug from mains and leave for around 30 mins?)

You said previously that the sound has less grip with the latest firmware.

You said “ lacked some sharpness “.
Never mind, it’s sounding good now, the most important.

I think Nova’s center of gravity is too high, lack of low frequency, too much high pitch

Haven’t had the chance to have a listen yet following the installation of 3.6.0 but looking forward to it based on the worse, no change, great improvement observations here.

Nova from switch on (inc. sleep) initially no sound from Analogue 3 or 4. I can get it to work by switching to another channel (i.e. Headphone, iRadio, etc…) and switching back, then its OK. Only noticed this following Firmware 3.6.0.5106 install.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Hi @Darkebear

I never played with the Digital Inputs.

When I got the ND555, the first thing I’ve done is to disable all those digital inputs. Considering my background, it was an obvious thing to do.

We don’t want any unused daemons running in the background. Even if unused, they could generate process interruptions and therefore use a little more computing power (very little…). That’s why I thought it was an obvious choice to disable them all.

I tried switching them on (some of them, then all, etc.). It makes a subtle difference. It’s more a feeling than an actual difference. I perceived it as being more “comfortable” to have them all off. No more.

I spent another couple of hours yesterday evening listening to my favorite tracks.

The changes brought by the 3.6, are pretty remarkable.

While getting used to them, I think I’m starting to figure out what has been done.

First, the noise floor is much lower (or so it seems). I’m able to clearly hear some details “in the background”, that were audible but rather faint (players moving, breathing, chairs, etc.). I perceived similar effect when adding a second 555PS.

This allows to a deeper soundstage. Not as 3 dimensional as with some Swiss electronics, but a lot less flat then the “original ND555” (ND555 + 1 PS + v.3.2).

Second, the lower and upper ends have changed.

The low end is gorgeous, really better. I don’t know how they could tweak that, but would be interested to know

The highs are also “heightened” if you will.

All in all it feels like some EQ was applied, an U shaped EQ.

I remain a bit dubious regarding the highs…

My speakers are pretty revealing, with nearly flat frequency response. Their tweeter and mid-driver are incredibly well-tuned and work together as a nearly single source. The tweeter, in particular, is amazing. All that is to say I am extremely sensible to that range of the spectrum.

But I’ll probably get used to it…

Let’s finish on a positive note : the ND555 + 2x555PS + v.3.6 is an outstanding source. Those who ditched it, should give it another try

It can’t imagine how good it sounds through the NAC S1 :star_struck: :musical_note: :star_struck:

For help, I updated the firmware to 3.6.0, but I didn’t like the sound, so I went back to 3.2.0. After the update, the screen didn’t display the interface. What can I do?

Have you tried a full power down, unplug, make a cup of tea, and then re-plug and power up again?

I would try this, and perhaps a full reset too if that doesn’t do the trick.

And if you’re still getting the issue, could you email Naim support giving the details. Thanks.

I’m using NDX2,252,300 and sq improvement is remarkable as well.

Yes, and spoke with Naim support. Problem still persists with occasional sound cuting-out now. Its going back to Naim in 2 weeks to have the rotary volume grating issue resolved so it will get fixed then. Support not had any similar issues elsewhere so may be a hardware fault? On the plus side, new firmware sounds better than before…

I find at present all set to ‘off’ works for some Classical works - if just listening to some piano music I can prefer it, but otherwise with more complex mixes with a bass beat then having the digital 1 ‘on’ and the rest ‘off’ is what works best here. Large transient low-bass in the music when present or absent seems to make me prefer one or the other but as I have it now is a nice compromise.

You are correct they can be a small effect - but just mentioning it can exist and it is free and easy to try.
I found having a default of all ‘on’ except digital 2,3,4, Bluetooth, AirPlay set to ‘off’ gives best results.
I don’t presuppose I know why - I just want the best that is freely available! :bear:

It sound very nice! :slightly_smiling_face:

I find there is ‘run-in’/‘warm-up’ over a few days with the clarity being a bit soft one day then clearer the next. It is the same effect I get with all items and not as long to come on-tune as for some things. With my system I hear it very easy and it is always good but I can hear it definitely improving in a direction I like.

DB.
