New firmware update

I keep my ND555 always on, that is fully on, not in standby. Although I’ve only experienced one random reboot so far, which was a few days after the update, I shall try an extended power off and on today with a reboot of the modem/router just for good measure.

To this layman, it’s almost as if the final process of installing the update is delayed in some way (in certain circumstances) as there are no reports that I have seen of repeated rebooting ?

My power button (Uniti Star) flashes when there is an sd card in the back. Also there is an additional switching sound when turning off and on the unit, which was not there on 3.4. This disappears when there is no SD Card in the slot.

I don’t have any issues regarding this (the Unit turns off in both cases) but i thought it was worth mentionning in case it is not an intended behaviour so Naim can look into this.

Just watching a Bluray where I’m using my Uniti2 as a DAC into a headphone amp. Just saw the Nova, which wasn’t playing and was in stand-by, just randomly shut down and reboot…

My NDX2 is also a victim of the shutter, stop, power off, reboot feature…

I did this a few days ago and confirm that it is as David says, everything needs to re set-up starting with the remote. It only took me a few minutes.

Curiously I didn’t have to re set-up Tidal. Perhaps all the account info is stored in the app ?

I had the same experience: Tidals library was still there👍🏻

And the phantom menace has just struck! Playing from NAS happily for the last few days then, just now, stuttering and reboot.

Hmmm…

Graeme, had you already done a full re-boot after the update?

No Richard I haven’t. What is meant by a ‘full reboot’? Slightly confused by all this talk of ‘reboots’, ‘resets’ and so on!

Cheers

Graeme

Re. Re-boot, support’s official advice is as follows:

Close the Naim app (don’t just minimise it).
Power off (unplug) the unit and leave for a good 10 minutes or so.
In this time, it may also be worth rebooting the router, just to give everything a chance to refresh.
When the router is back up and running, switch the Naim unit back on and allow to fully boot up.
Then open up the Naim app, connect to the appropriate ‘Room’.

If you are using any streaming services then log out first and log back in last.

Finally I’ve applied to join to the beta tester team; I don’t have too much time but I’ll do my best and will try to break it, for sure…

I just experienced another random reboot :rage:

  • ND555, full 500 series system
  • Firmware 3.5 installed a few days ago
  • After smooth install I did power off the whole system.
  • I don’t use the Naim app.
  • I don’t use Qobuz, Tidal, etc…
  • I stream locally from a Roon server
  • I use the ND555 as a Roon endpoint
  • my network is sorted out (I can confidently say I know what I do)

Clearly there is something wrong with this software release.
A 3.5.1 is very much expected

@Richard.Dane @Stevesky these random reboots are not related to the Naim App or to streaming services. I thought this might be of some interest.

But I remain very pleased with the sound improvements that came with the 3.4 and even 3.5 firmware release

Thanks Thomas. If you’ve done a full re-boot as described above and still get a random re-boot, then please get in touch with Naim tech support on Monday.

Out of interest - did you at all use the Naim App after the Firmware upgrade?
My observation was that it does ‘something’ to the Firmware to change its character (positively) and perhaps also may ‘initialize’ something that otherwise may later cause a problem if not done.

Disclaimer - this is just a speculation on my part that may have no basis in any fact, but worth eliminating from consideration. Just one use the latest version of the Naim App to access the Firmware - then close it and go back to how you previously used it and see if that ‘fixes’ the issues.
This does not mean that anyone should have to do this, but perhaps it was not tested in Beta and everyone at least once used the Naim App in testing so may have missed when it is never used.

DB.

Thank you for your reply.
Yes, I did a complete reboot.
I’ll call or email support on monday.

Thanks Richard. What does ‘unplug’ mean if using the XPSDR?

Cheers

Hi DB,

Yes I did use the Naim App for the update itself and after the update (just to check my config options).

I then updated the Naim App and checked again and did another complete power off of the ND555.

That kind of random reboots look like poor memory management. Not cool… and can be tricky to debug. Hope it’s not related to that.

It’d be curious to take a look at their software test protocols…

Unplug the xpsdr…the power supply to your source, let it reboot, and fingers crossed it will be sorted.

Just power down the XPS.
