I have an ND5 on my P3. My plan was to add a P6/ND7 to the stable later - that was before the arrival of the new one. Could you over spec a P6 with an ND9? Or is that a vinyl monkfish?
The P6 is a fantastic turntable and will make justice to any cartridge. The “spec” construct is a selling strategy that trickled down to discussion forums, unfortunately.
P6 new ? Would go for second hand Rp10 then.
Well…not “spec” but Rega does have a fairly consistent upgrade order & sweetspot packages.
But if you already have a deck, want to max it out without immediate plans for upgrading the turntable it’s fun trying it out. It’s just that in today’s market quite quickly you might have just as well upgraded the deck first, which almost invariably brings greater moves forward.
Deck-first is a more a conceptual decision, like source-first, flat-earth, or half-budget ![]()
ps: the The Ear review also mentions ND9 being more at home in the P10 than in the P8
Yep that surprised me. Hence my question about a factory install of a P10/ND9. Perhaps I’ll have to save a tad more money. That white ceramic platter looks awfully nice. ![]()
It also says that the P10/Nd7 was a delightful combination, that’s why I don’t believe in upgrade paths laid out by manufacturers, there are simply too many possible combinations that can give excellent results. The packages are mere sales strategies IMV, and better approached with skepticism.
Or approached with demos and judge for yourself
no replacement for that.
It was good to read that a Supernait 3 built in phono was used in the Nd9 Ear review. Could be another match made in heaven.
Also noted that they did not review the new Ref Nd9 on a P8 as recommended by Rega. I will wait to see if anyone has actually used this set up.
I’m sure it sounds great. My ND7 has opened up and sounds wonderful on my P8 into Nait 50 now ![]()
Well, wouldn’t that count for any cartridge ?
I’m sure a P8/Nd9 would be mighty fine too.
I was listening to Terry Callier on Sunday night and I was sure he was in the room with me. ( very emotional ) The P8 fitted with a Nd7 thru a Supernait 3 phono gives an unbelievable presence of music. I’m hoping to make a trade up to the Nd9 when it’s available down here. No prices of yet.
When the time comes for a new cartridge, I will probably still head for an already great Nd7 for my Planar 8. With the extra price of the Nd9, I could be making a (boron) rod for my own back.
Rega say they’ve sold +35 000pcs of ND carts since 2024.
The great question, as they will have probably similar prices: Nd9 or Ania Pro?
Maybe Ania Pro will be replaced now? Rega seems to be in a rather big product update flow now.
Have to say I’m stunned at a figure that high, I saw it in the release/article and re-read it.
The ND3 is better than the Exact. I know because I had a proper listen to the Elys and Exact because they were being heavily discounted and will Rega that only happens if something radically new is afoot. I think the ND range is transformative. I have the P3RS which comes with the ND5 as standard.
I doubt it. The P8 is the sweet spot because you can get a relatively affordable ( not that I can afford it but you get the gist) TT with a top notch cartridge. It would be the most I would spend but if fortune did smile I’d go P10 with an Apheta 2 or even Aphelion. Of course you have to factor in the cost of a decent MC stage so it soon mounts up. P8 is an excellent TT but I probably wouldn’t have stuck anything fancier than an Ania on it. It’s too easy to lose perspective with this malarkey. I’ve heard the P2/ND3 combo and it’s really engaging. If I was house sitting and the owner had the P2/ND3 I’d happily immerse myself listening to album after album.
They don’t come up for sale that often and they really hold their value. Chances are a 2nd hand P10 will have a Rega MC attached which means you need MC phono stage. Every step up in Rega range can be heard but I wouldn’t go P3RS to P6. The P6 is better but if I’m going to upgrade it will be to the P8. I think the 2 step up principal holds up really well until the P10. If I had a P1 I’d go P3 next. If I had a P2 it would be P6 and so on.
Yet in one year I had P3/ND5 + Neo, P6/ND7 and P8/ND7 on the same system, there is a significant gap at each TT…
