A walk around Fort Casey and a visit to the Admiralty Head Light.
Down the sound on the Hood Canal is the Bangor US Naval Submarine base for the West Coast and just so happens a boat was being escorted into port by the U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) Maritime Force Protection Unit. The submarine is still submerged running between the two large escort ships. The escort ships are armed with gyrostabilized machine guns, with advanced optics, which are fired under remote control from the ship’s bridge. The gyrostabilized gun’s greater long range accuracy make it more appropriate for intercepting speedboats laden with a suicide bomb. There are also three smaller armed coast guard vessels that were darting around out in front and on the flanks of the escort vessels as well.
I visited Fort Casey in the early 90s and stayed in Oak Harbor. It reminded me of Officer and a Gentleman and at the time the island was gently buzzed by A6s.
Somewhere I have a picture of sunset at the Deception Narrows bridges. I must see if I can find it. I just love that area. Scenically beautiful. It was a mix of sunshine, grey skies and cooler temperatures and as a Brit I felt right at home.
V&A Museum & RRS Discovery. Getting a small exhibition there, and my book launch in September. Quite excited to see the publisher’s final edit this week.
