Yes, she is new to motorcycling and is in her 50s.

It’s a very torquey bike to start with, a good thing about modern bikes is their different power maps which will help her. A friend also in his 50s passed his test last year and spent the first few months in Rain mode which helped him immensely.
Hope she enjoys it, its a lovely bike.

A bike like that needs an experience rider.
I hope that she stays safe, my experience with people who do that end up selling the bike if they haven’t ended up in hospital or worse.
That certainly a heart over head moment.
And a generous licensing system

Yeah, interesting first bike. Not sure that’s the way to go. Hopefully she learns fast.

Love it ! Two stroke triples made a fabulous noise.

In Nz you need 18 months (I think) on an under 49 hp bike before progressing to the main event. Would be Interesting to look at statistics on fatalities of new riders in the UK

You can observe a clear quantitative pattern in New Zealand: learner riders (i.e. first‑year riders under the graduated system) face crash rates in the dozens per 10,000 riders per year, and that risk increases post‑licensing. In the UK, while overall motorcycle rider fatality figures are tracked, there is no breakdown specifically for first‑year or novice riders.

Oh eyes wide shut

A blast from the past! Honda 154, twin cylinder, overhead cam, 4 stroke with electric start, indicators and if I recall correctly, 5 gears. British competition was the Bantam :joy::joy::joy:!!!

Bought in 1972 and used daily for 6 years until the Ford Capri lured me to the dark side….

I bought this when I got my first job in 1982. It started out life in black and gold (Coburn & Hughes colours) but had been dropped so I changed the colour scheme to Ducati racing. For three years it was my sole transport - commuting, shopping, holidays, everything, and I kept it until 2018 when it got too much for me to manage. It’s wildly uncomfortable and unbelievably noisy. Just fabulous!

What’s the bike, is that an A3 Avenger or A1 Samurai?

I guess that’s got the same ‘shift cam’ engine as my R1250RT?

I recently bought a 98 Kawasaki ZX7r and was amused to notice this felt slower than my lardy old tourer… !

I’m not sure to be honest, it was a long time ago.

I think shift cam is the same it’s the final drive gearing, suspension, et al, that’s different. I like RTs and will rent them when I fancy a fly and ride. Great for the PCH on the west coast in the states.

That’s a great ride. I did it many years ago from LA to San Francisco.

Had planned to spend three months in the USA/Canada in 2024 where I would have repeated this, but ‘life’ got in the way. Maybe another time…

Is there a best part to that route? It’s something we’d like to do in the near future. My girlfriends sister lives in Seattle so we will be going sometime soonish.

The new R1300 RS (sport) looks lovely.

I like the lost coast but it’s all pretty good in northern CA. WA and OR coasts are nice as well.

Looks amazing, I’ve driven the LA to San Francisco road but will take a motorbike next time.

It’s a fantastic ride and so many nice places on the route.
