All this does show how generous Naim are with this forum, how many manufacturers would allow a thread about a competitor’s product .
True., but which Naim turntable competes with the Linn?
There are a number of recent threads that other manufacturers would probably not allow. Naim are very generous here; particularly with some of the ill-mannered comments.
I agree. It is a very open forum for a sponsored site. I think it shows Naim in a good light and does allow discussion that leads most of us back to Naim being the best in any particular category. My hope is that where we occasionally stray, the reasons are noted and development of future products are influenced. I am ever hopeful that Naim will have a digital transport/ renderer sans amplification that will stop me going down the Moon/Auralic route.
Naim and Linn without each other back in time? There’s room for both if only to keep people close to me to both - but that’s me at the end of the day. Both for me go back to the 1980s so not bad.
My Linn is from Lewisham too, but much more recent (2016). It’s great that a dealer has been around for so long, it gives you confidence. I started using them about ‘89 and they continue to provide outstanding service.
I considered a harban plinth and for a while rather fancied one, but not enough to get one. And not enough to think I need to grab one while I can. If I go for 808s and get the oak finish I might get a plinth to match. But I might not…
Have you room for a vast greenhouse/ garden centre😉
Really? That’s very sad. I very much doubt there will ever be a plinth made to Chris’s standard. The finish is something I’ve never seen on any wood product and it’s not just the finish, it’s the construction. I take this particular product like the Aro, once they’re gone, they’re gone.
I have a Woodsong wenge plinth and (heresy alert), while the construction and finish are more than adequate, to my eye they’re nothing to write home about. But I love the appearance - dark, with a somewhat coarse grain - and it’s a distinct sonic improvement on my previous Linn walnut plinth, so it’ll likely see me out.
My first LP12 was a 1986 ish (fluted cherry) and my new one is rosenut not fluted. I like the new one better.

Good shout for the “not fluted”. To be fair, the walnut is a lovely finish
It is reputed to sound better as well
I have heard same?
SQ is very important.
However, good design, (aesthetics / ergonomics / industrial design, etc), is also a factor.
I just like flutes.
Top. LP12 April.
Middle. Where is all this going?
Bottom. LP12 Oct.
A brief burst of autumn sunshine yesterday, hi-lighting the system (and all the dust!). So, a good opportunity to update my Sondek pics from April.
The visible change is that my old Lingo 1 has been replaced by a Radikal. Nothing obvious appears to have changed on the deck but it now has Kore, Tramp 2, and of course Karousel.
Thanks to @KJC and @Dave (on the Karousel thread) for sound (pun intended) advice, and particularly to Dave at SO York for arranging extensive A/B dems to show the merits of each component and then for his usual meticulous “fettling” @Blackstar (a great word I hadn’t heard for ages!)
A lot of changes In one go, makes it difficult to be absolutely clear which component is having the most influence. But, I am enjoying a very significant sound improvement and new delights in many well loved albums.
So as predicted the improvements have put a smile on my face, which is worth a lot these days.
Just ordered my Karousel - just a three week wait! Nice to see an LP12 back on THE table too! I pity the day that I sold all my SOs!
A dealer is reputed to have done a side by side test with six identical LP12s and the walnut sounded the best.
My feeling would be that walnut is possibly the hardest wood and that might have a bearing
Nice one Magpie, I bet that’s a major improvement. Yes I understand your comment about not knowing which component brings what to the deck, but so what, it’s the sum of all parts that count!
I had a Tiger Paw Javelin, Akula and Ulrika all done at the same time (if I remember correctly!) and the improvement was massive. Like the S Org table as well, I still use one.
I take it you’re in the NE with that avatar?
Better stick with my walnut then
