I like the idea of the topic but I think an even better topic would be “I love the album but it has a song I hate” (I am not starting this topic by the way, if someone else wants to they can).

My choice is Sgt Pepper (Beatles). I hate “When I’m 64” and I’m not too happy with “Lovely Rita Meter Maid”

I am from the era of records and you had to sit through the stuff you did not like (unless you jumped up and skipped the track)

There are lots of records I don’t like and so I don’t have them. It’s annoying to have one you like and hate one of the tracks.

I’ll support you in adding Jerusalem to the list. Both Parry’s music and Blake’s words qualify IMO. And I do enjoy some Parry and a lot of Blake’s poetry.

I disliked Brother in Arms when it came out, but listened to it recently without my 80s prejudice against them and thought it was a great album. However, I understand your experience at the record shop when you listen to the same songs day in, day out. I worked at Woolworths during the Christmas period and to this day can’t stand 95% of the songs from that NOW Christmas album. It was a form of torture, and every December since then, you get that Groundhog Day experience.

I think this is a case of a track being played to death, and beyond on the radio and in public places. I think it was their most commercial album, made for the US market, and shallow commercial music starts to grate after a while.

I liked their previous albums, but Brothers in Arms was a dissapointment.

I liked their previous albums, but Brothers in Arms was a disappointment.

I thought the similarities to Brothers in Arms were very close to Peter Gabriel’s So, (which I have loved since it was released), in terms of sound production and, in particular, “Ride Across the River”. Where do you stand on Gabriel’s work? In addition, which is your go-to Dire Straits album?

Tina Turner is also one I can comfortably leave to the side. Her voice is just grating.

My introduction to Tina Turner was through the Private Dancer era, which left me cold, and I was clueless about her earlier work. Then I saw this performance and my opinion completely changed.

There is a theory that you hit a certain age and for the next ten years music in the charts just doesn’t cut it. So for me that whole britpop era, Oasis, Blur et al was just unappealing.

You can add Springsteen, Coldplay and U2 to that list for me. My son at the tender age of 15 bought a Coldplay CD, the one with the Napoleon song. I said “all those tracks will sound the same”. 5 years later he said “ you were right”……. Tom.

I worked in Northampton for a while and every year the fair would come to town and set up all along the high street. The Waltzer would spring up right outside my office.

Now, I like a bit of Kylie as much as the next old bloke, however when I hear ‘Spinning Around’ come up on the radio, I’m near reduced to shakes and tears at the memory of the high decibel, fairground P.A. system playing it on repeat 47 times a day…

For me must have been about the age of 5, before I heard any, and after the next 10 years of chart music not cutting it, there was only a small proportion of chart music that I then liked, declining markedly within 5 years as the rulers of closed whatever loophole had let good music through!
