System Pics 2022

Do you have the acoustic panes behind the loudspeakers to cure booming?

Thanks all. Yes, acoustic panels to address the booming bass. I have a number of panels on the ceiling too and at first reflection points on the side walls. The room has large windows, so it needs a little help!

Looks like Rory Gallagher’s Strat third from right.
Against the grain. :+1:t2:

Good spot - yes a Fender Custom Shop Rory Gallagher replica. I run it through very similar kit that Rory used to use too, but somehow I don’t quite sound the same. Shame you can’t buy talent!

As suggested earlier - I’ll get onto the guitar thread and post some other pics.

Wait, what!? That’s hilarious, I never knew that was underneath. Same on my CD5 after checking, awesome.

My Atom to Nova experience is some what different.
A different sound but not a step up.
The Nova does have more bass but it’s a thump sound. After a bit you may miss the Atom’s more subtle sound.

I gave my Nova to my father so it’s probably gathering dust somewhere.

Another thoughtful pic :+1:
Great.

Thanks. I’m guessing other owners are as surprised as I was to find a logo under the drawer!

It’s early days, but so far I am finding the nova fuller and rounder in the mid bass region, producing a more balanced sound. I also find it seems to take less effort - a very “easy” sound. The atom was amazing but I found it was heavy in the deep bass and treble but a little thin through the middle. After a few hours I was finding myself getting a bit tired of listening and wanted to turn it down. I put this down to the sound being too “bright”, but it could be other things. I should say that I had the atom for almost 2 years and it was by far the best music player I have ever owned.

Sorry if my descriptive terms are not quite on point, I do find it difficult to describe the differences in words. Also, bear in mind that my experience is in my listening room, with my speakers and my ears!

May I ask if you are using the same speakers with the Nova that you did with the Atom? One of the reasons I bought the Nova was to fill a bigger room which also required bigger (floorstanding) speakers. Have kept the bookshelf speakers and the Atom. I’d describe the Atom as being lighter on its feet and I still love listening to it.

I am using the same stand mount loudspeakers (as shown in the picture) - b&w 705s2. My room is about 5.5m x 4.5m.

Incidentally, when I demo’d the nova against the atom at my local dealer, after listening to the nova for a while, he plugged in a 250dr via the nova pre-amp out. That was a very different sound to my ears. I remember thinking it was a much more rich and grown up sound profile.

I found the nova to be a fuller sound than the atom with more room around the instruments, easier etc. as said above. In short, similar to the atom but with a few wrinkles ironed out. The 250, on the other hand was different - not “more of the same but better”, but a very different experience.

I am not great at describing stereo attributes, so to use a car analogy, to my ears, if the atom was a Porsche Boxster, then the nova was a 911. But the 250dr, that was a Rolls Royce.

All three were demo’d through the dealers 705s2 loudspeakers to replicate my home sound. I was amazed at the quality and depth of sound the 250 was able to get out of the b&ws, having assumed that my next upgrade would be to “better” loudspeakers.

This is my system, Rega Planer 8, Naim SN3 with HiCap DR and an Icon Audio HP8 MkII headphone amplifier. Bowers and Wilkins CDM 1NT speakers.
In the right hand cupboard is a Rega Aria phono pre-amp and in the left hand cupboard is the Rega Neo power supply.

The empty shelf below the TT is where the CD player lived until it went south.

I have a GIK acoustic panel either side of each speaker.

On a table to my left is an Atom HE.

Like you I have the SN3/HICapDR with the CD5XS

Even without the nDAC and XPS-2 the CD5XS is a great player

Thank you. They seems to be a few people selling laser mechanisms for the Naim CDX5, around the £30 mark. There’s at least one preowned CDX5 up for sale.
I have to save up first though.
