I always used to use spike protectors (Naim Chips) under my speakers even when they were on a concrete floor. I found that spikes could sometimes dig into the concrete slightly so that they were no longer evenly loaded and level. Chips eliminated this problem, and were hidden under the carpet.

I now use the little plastic feet that were supplied with my speakers and no doubt cost virtually nothing. The manufacturer recommends that you do not replace them with spikes or other fancy feet.

Whether or not the system is optimised is open to question depending on one’s viewpoint. Likewise the definition of tweaks as being ‘weird and wonderful’ is just your own opinion.

One thing is certainly unnecessary though. And that is being rude to someone who is making a friendly suggestion to a fellow enthusiast. You are not required to agree with my viewpoint and you are perfectly entitled to reject it.

But it is not necessary to be rude and derogatory to someone who is just making a friendly suggestion. You do yourself a disservice sir.

First time that we are testing active speakers with the Atom HE in our house. These are a pair of Elac Navis ARF-51 connected to the Atom HE via XLR. There are definitely advantages over passive speakers (no amp, no speaker wire, no endless component matching) but not yet sure if we like our Dynaudio Contour 3.4 better or these Elac. They both have their pros and cons, in summary: the Dynaudios sound more ‘spectacular’ compared to the more refined and airy sound of the Elac.

Who do you think you’re kidding - it’s very obviously a mono.

I have no beef with people who disagree with my hi-fi views at all. Different viewpoints can lead to stimulating discussions and I have often benefitted from other people’s different perspectives on things. That’s what it’s all about.

But I think you are being generous in saying ‘he can be a bit abrupt’. Rudeness plain and simple is how I would describe it. A disappointing show from someone who I know is a long-standing and respected forum member.

I personally believe that the latest generations of the Naim amplifiers have moved away from the original sound signature of chrome ones, which are very sweet and musical. Maybe it is nostalgia, but the one I like best is the NAP 140+Hicap.

Interesting. I would have described the chrome generation as highly musical but definitely not ‘sweet’. Slightly hard and unrelenting is what I would say. In contrast the current generation to my ears has a much sweeter and more forgiving nature.

It’s hardly rude and I’d suggest you are making far more of something than needs to be made. In my view it was a daft suggestion, that’s all. Let’s move on.

Well if you had said to me in a light-hearted fashion ‘I think that’s a daft idea Pete!’ then I wouldn’t have been in the least offended. Anyway if your post is by way of a sort of apology then I accept. Forget it and let’s move on.

I’ve just played other vinyl I have (I only 3 at this stage) and they all played much better than the PF album, I think you’re on money there’s no way I can use that as a benchmark. Shame great album poor pressing.

I don’t have the original pressing (I did of course back in the 70s) so I can only judge on the copies I have. My old CD which is probably 25 years old sounds ok, the hi res file I bought from HD Tracks last year sounds much better. The vinyl copy I just bought is rubbish and I’ll probably never play it again.

What do you find to be the difference, Pete? What is inferior to your ears on the new vinyl?

Pete I’m down south, just spinning Dark Side

The cover says it’s a 2003 remaster but I can’t tell by who maybe @Richard.Dane knows more

The system is still warming up

I’m reasonably presently surprised, the amount of detail coming through is top notch

Bass a little light, some bits of tracks are somewhat “rough” around the edges etc etc

I’m thinking the recording from day one wasn’t the best anyway

But overall not too bad to listen to , I’ll give it another go after system left on overnight etc

What make are the speakers and stands?

Is that a Devailet hiding down the bottom?
