System Pics 2023

Yes, the SJ block is a recent addition that hasn’t yet convinced me. It does a lot extremely well but there is a harshness in the upper mids and highs that I’m not enjoying. Sean recommended connecting everything and since Innuos use his power supplies and he uses Naim himself, I followed his recommendation. I previously had everything except the switch connected into a Musicworks block and didn’t have the harshness, but nor was it as open or fast. Removing the switch doesn’t remove the harshness so I guess thats not the culprit. I will give it more time and experimentation but if it doesn’t improve, it wont stay in the system.

There are several Magico users in the forum. These are some of the least coloured speakers I have heard and since I like the Naim coloration, I try not to add or subtract from it. The trade off is that they are not tuned to forgive less optimised systems/rooms and will show you if something is wrong e.g. my new power block (that others are very happy with). Get the system right and they are stunning.

I’m sure you’l work it out, just a matter of elimination but I’d be surprised if the culprit was the Sean Jacobs block.

Which cables did you go for?

  1. All Copper
  2. Silver in - Copper out
  3. All Silver

I think @Thomas had some Magico speakers in “The Listening Room Reality” thread.

All copper. The idea was to eliminate connectors and fuses first and foremost. Later to experiment with a single silver cable to determine the optimal final configuration (if not all copper). The all copper block would then go to a second system.

Yes, he used the same S3mk2 before moving to M2. I’m quite looking forward to hearing the new S3, with technology trickled down from M9.

To be fair, it’s not intended as a domestic listening system (you would need a very very big room to accomodate it), it’s part of Devon Turnbull’s sound art. So the speakers are intended to be brutalist sculpture as much as they are loudspeakers. I think I could live with all of the stuff, apart from the speakers. I quite like the turntable and I love the Studer A80 tale machine and the custom-built valve amps. But in terms of sound quality, it was one of the best I’ve ever heard.

You can read about it here:

Amazing, thanks for posting, and indirectly pointing me to Devon Turnbull’s Instagram account, lots of stuff to look at there.

1200G motor based, custom wood plinth, 12" tonearm TTs, what’s not to like!? 8)

If I lived in Japan and had mislaid an amplifier, I don’t think the first place I’d look would be the basement of a Belgian farmhouse. Congratulations on getting it back

I’m probably thinking too hard but that’s either a power amp or a power supply. Stripped down system with no volume control?

Norma 140 drive the Neat XLS’s really well ?

Good match overall ?

Thanks Ants

Yes, it’s actually a superb match. No power issues at all. Still breaking in the speakers, closing in on 200 hours

That’s a helluva hardcore sub

Guessing it really rocks…

Sometimes, but it’s more a movie zone for her, but she does like the music blu-ray concerts. She’s a teenager now, so often she is in her room on the Chromebook watching YouTube videos and God knows what.
