Nice.
Good to see Robbie still playing. He and John are still hippie souls.
Getting confused on all this.
I have the analogue productions 200g 45rpm versions already. ( they sound great)!
Is this the same or different?
It’s a new Bernie Grundman mastering @ 33/3.
My copy arrived today. First play will have to be over the weekend. Looking forward to hearing this!
Enjoy - hard to justify for me to get though!
Received mine today as well, likewise will find a bit of time to give it a spin over the weekend.
The whole package is impressive, just need the music to match it, fingers crossed.
Sounds good. Not revelatory, but good…booklet wasn’t much, sadly.
May settle down to a vs listening tomorrow or Saturday with my original copy, the AP 45 and the UHQR.
I have been thinking about getting the UHQR. I have a first press original and the AP 45, so would be very interested to know the results of your comparison.
By no means an in depth comparison as I have to go out shortly, but just ran through the first 3 tracks of the AP vs UHQR and the UHQR certainly has a really nice groove about it, and small details seemed more obvious (handclaps, whoops, the “right on” in Been Down etc). It’s cut a little lower so comparison is tricky. My foot was tapping more with the UHQR, but that could be because I played it second…or expectation bias…
No time for the original press yet, sorry.
Whoops, my mistake! The “right on” is on Cars Hiss… of course!
Got carried away, lol.
Having just played the Japanese first press (can’t find the UK yet!), are there any pressings of LAW that don’t sound great?!
I have to say that the UHQR of LAW is my first copy of the album, I’ve a copy of their self titled album and enjoy that so treated myself to the UHQR, a bit rash but YOLO prevailed.
And it sounds awesome.
RSD November 29th:
The Doors Live In Detroit
4 LP set
First time on vinyl…should be good!
CD tracklist:
Steve really spends my money! will def look at that!
Lol…when the UHQR LA Woman arrived, all my wife said was “but…haven’t you already got everything by The Doors?”
My wallet started squeaking & nodding vigourously, but I kicked it under the sofa…
Wow! UHQR copy of LA Woman is the best sounding record in my collection. Dead silent with excellent clarity and soundstage separation. Not cheap but worth the spend to see what my system can do.
Hmmmm… Contradicting myself here, my two Steely Dan UHQR’s were not that impressive, certainly not £150 more impressive. However, my copy of When the Levee Breaks by Vanessa Fernandez sounds pretty good and that was £68, done by the same personalities in production I believe.
Tempted to try another UHQR, but then again, on the other hand my birthday is coming up…
Tim
I remember (IIRC) there was some discussion about the quality of the Dan UHQR’s across various forums. I dont personally know as I’m not enough of a fan to warrant buying them, but…the UHQR of LA Woman is a different/better kettle of fish…especially as a birthday present!
But…I’m a Doors nut, so not to be trusted!
Happy birthday when it arrives (the day and/or the UHQR, lol).
Another Doors nut here! I did mention it to my wife and she thought it would be a good extra bonus birthday present. It will be interesting as she doesn’t know how much the UHQR albums cost, but I’ll refer her to you regarding the recommendation
I do have the box set with the mono version of the first album, just been playing LA Woman and according to the notes Bernie Grundman was involved and they used the original tapes and did some speed corrections which I did not know…
Tim
@steviebee can I clarify this album, I can only find it as a single album at 33 1/3 on UHQR. Thought it would be a double at 45 RPM?
Tim
The double 45rpm is that of the 2012 Analogue Productions reissue, Tim.
This 33/3 UHQR is a new mastering by Bernie Grundman, that also reinstates the original window sleeve. Whether it equals or surpasses the AP in sound quality is moot.
I think it’s a warmer presentation, and nice to have in single album form…but I’m a Doors nut as said, so…caveat!
Edit/ I just read your previous post, so as a fellow Doors nut: buy it or get it bought for you at all speed! and disregard the last bit below, lol.
LAW sounds pretty darn great in all the pressings I’ve heard…the UK, US and Japanese…so whether the UHQR cost is worth it to you has to be a personal decision.
Light My Fire was a little slow on the original and subsequent issues…until the speed error was corrected.
