The Naim New Classic Range - Part 2

SL cable only makes sense at used prices, but it is good stuff.

Agree @IainO . I got my DIN - DIN and DIN - XLRā€™s used. Speaker cable is harder as Iā€™ve rarely seen it used and never at the right length.

I agree, Iā€™m not paying attention to the screen when Iā€™m listening to music.

Well if youā€™re going to include a screen in the products design and charge customers for it then at least implement it fully and sensibly. When listening to radio stations that provide meta data as an example, as I do a lot, it would be particularly useful to be able to glance over to see who the artist is without having to fumble for the remote or open iPad etc.

Completely agree, it really wouldnā€™t take much at all to make it more useful. Itā€™s taking out code to turn it into a toggle, which from a software engineering point of view is highly desirable, less to maintain and less to go wrong.

The screen seems fully implemented and sensible to me. Shrugs shoulders.

Turns out to be quite a bit. Pushed them right back with no toe in then moved them forward until the bass/mid felt right. Theyā€™ve ended up 7 cm back from where they were. Puts the drivers at 61 cm from the wall, pretty close really. Interestingly this is only 2 cm further back from where I had them when the power supply was on the nDAC. In terms of bass I found the power supply tightened up and controlled the low end significantly, which is why the speakers have had to be quite a lot further forward without it.

Anyway, now to the toe in ā€¦ really want to get this sorted soon so I can listen this evening without analysingā€¦ hard with something new, for me at least :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for the comprehensive response (and to the comments from Buryfc & IainO)

Having worked in the communications cable industry I do question some of the claims made for super-expensive interconnectsā€¦although I think my excellent dealer here will loan me a SL for a few days

Less than a week in Iā€™m loving listening to the 300 system and agree with your approach of living with things for a while before spending even more substantial amounts on transformers!

My 1st move after the burn-in period will be to assess the room acoustics

How low can we go then?)

Most interested by this information. Was the combo really versatile? Would you positively compare dCS Rossini XLR NC 350s with 333/300/332/300/350s ?
Were there limits to this set-up?

As low as your Dealer will agree!

I didnā€™t compare to the 6 box 300 series because I have no intention of going there. It was a big jump up from the 222/300/350 though. More detail and space between individual instruments was the key thing I noted.

I didnā€™t think UK dealers would be prepared to discount NC products. Perhaps i should have asked .

Few years ago I was getting big discount straight with my dealer in Moscow. I think thatā€™s why he left the business, and left the country)

Ouch! I ask for a discount on everything. If you donā€™t ask you donā€™t get! It is like all retail products - there is a margin involved and why should the retailer have it all?

Any further update? :smirk:

Hi, Iā€™m struggling a bit, Iā€™ve wavered back and forth through ā€œno, maybe, probably, yesā€ over the past couple of days depending on what album Iā€™m listening to and at what volume.

Moving the speakers has helped a lot, @IainO, youā€™re right, there is quite a lot more treble as well as the increased midrange. Probably not as noticeable if coming from the NDX2 than from the nDAC. If I do decide to go ahead Iā€™ll need to decrease the treble on my speakers quite a lot. Iā€™m using the highest treble resistor in the crossovers which with the nDAC gave lovely crystal clear treble without harshness, even at loud levels. Feels like Iā€™ll need to use a much lower level, at least to start with, as itā€™s definitely too harsh right now with some albums. I listened to Porcupine Tree ā€œIn Absentiaā€ after work today pretty loud and it was great, clarity, detail etc just getting a little bright at times. Then listened to Quadrophenia, a lot was hard to listen to, way too bright, particularly ā€œCut my Hairā€ if I remember correctly, had to turn it down. This has been the pattern over the past couple of days.

So Iā€™ll need to tune my speakers from the nDAC to the 333 if I do decide to go ahead, which very much depends on how good a deal Iā€™m offered.

Thats the negative, there are a lot of positives, thereā€™s definitely a lot of synergy between the new gear as youā€™d expect, everything hangs together really nicely with complex passages, very engaging, the clarity is exceptional ā€¦ and my wife really likes the look and simplicity, as do I.

Itā€™s all been quite stressful really, I had imagined doing this later in the year. Incredibly annoying that Naim have raised the prices on this new gear so soon after launch ā€¦ itā€™s put me off a bit tbh.

Your brain can initially interpret more detail as brightness, it has happened to me on a few occasions, give it a little more time if you can but maybe your nd5/ndac is just preferable

I can see that yes, the nDAC isnā€™t short on detail at all but the 333 in combination with the other boxes does improve on that quite significantly, also in the way everything is tied together ā€¦ itā€™s quite astonishing.

Looks like Iā€™ll probably have to suck up the price rise and get the speakers tweaked after work tomorrow so I can see how it goes over the next couple of evenings before I have to take it back.

Or order one today :flushed:.
