The Naim New Classic Range - Part 2

I am about to add nc250 to replace the 250dr with my nc222. The nc300 will have to wait until next year

Not really interested in Linn anything (apart from my lp12)

The NC250 over the 250DR was a much bigger upgrade than I expected. Bass depth and control, more articulate mids with multitracked voices become easier to distinguish and wider imaging were what I noticed first if I remember correctly. I was very happy with the upgrade. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I agree on that, but however I found the NC 250 a bit leaner .

I went down that route, costly mistake on my part back with Naim, but each to their own :+1:

My observation is the NC is lean on noise and fat on music.

Agree, particularly in an all balanced configuration. Adding an NPX300 to the 333 this weekend to give me a ā€˜Four pack’ into active PMC twenty.5 23i.

It’s funny you should say that, the more I consider my NC system and, more importantly, listen to it, the more I get the feeling that’s exactly what I would end up doing……

I often think that one becomes more focussed on achieving the change than actually understanding what said change might bring about. I guess buyer’s remorse is more commonplace than we may imagine.

I am very happy with my 222 250 set up, especially since removing the XPS-DR from the 222.
I just added a PhoenixNet switch as a replacement for the EE8 and that has made a subtle improvement to the soundstage. I don’t feel motivated to spend $8K on a 300 yet awhile - going to let all the new cables and stuff mature for several months. :sunglasses: :eyes:

Maturing for over a year now, only upgraded the XLRs and mains cables. (photo from the nap position)

Yes, agree listening to your system is key. What suits one may not suit another, especially when room, music genre, listening volume and the like are taken into consideration.
For me I liked the look and sound of my Titans using NC components (222, 300, 250). Going active with the single Linn box gave me (YMMV) a presentation that just seemed to click. The Naim was not bad just felt the Linn active system was better, and no I’m not going to try/demo the Naim boxes with ATC or PMC actives. The ATC are physically too large for room aesthetics, PMC in the .23 active variant may work but I found them to be too bright for me in passive version. Mrs O likes what we have at the moment, so do I, so here we’ll stay. At least until I just happen to drop in for a chat/coffee with my dealer…….

The twenty.5 23 was a touch bright, but the ā€˜i’ series sorted that out. Going active with them is a whole different ball game in terms of grip and driver integration. And that’s coming off the back of a 300DR.

At £1795 the Active Upgrade Kit is a steal.

Hi @GraemeH
Thanks for the additional info. What you say does sorta make me want to go listen to them, and I know my dealer could facilitate that for me. Suspect Mrs O wouldn’t be overly happy if I said I was looking to change speakers again having only had the Kudos for 9 months or so. Good job we both really like the current sound presentation and also the look (more important for Mrs O).
Perhaps a dealer supplied coffee would be good, just to see how he is getting on and maybe just listen to something I’ve not heard - educational reasons only. :grinning: :grinning:

Swapped the 250dr for nc250 a couple of weeks ago, so only 60-odd listening hours in, but starting to sound very promising

And 11 days later (probably around 70-80 hours listening time in that period as I work in the same room and have been extremely busy of late) sounding very fine indeed, though I am not quite sure what the 250dr sounded like anymore!

Just completed my OC to NC journey -NDX2/SN3 to 333/332/250.

The 333 was the last part of the puzzle having ran the NDX2 with the 332/250 for about six months. It’s early days but so far I would say the new streamer sounds a bit brighter with more emphasis on percussion yet the bass is bigger, lyrics are more intelligible, location of instruments and soundstage both top notch.

I recently completed my full-fat 300 system. I’ve been living with the 5 boxes for a while, with the NPX 300 on the 332 pre. That’s where it made the biggest difference as it’s also powering the NVC TT through the 332.

I installed the 6th box, a second NPX 300, exactly 22 days ago today, powering the 333 streamer. It made a significant positive difference immediately, out of the box. Liquidity is what I can best describe it as. With the power supply connected, music flows effortlessly and there is more ā€œmeat on the bonesā€ from the digital frontend. I was very happy.

But then today something happened. I did not make any changes to the system. I sat to listen in the evening after work as I typically do. It is impossible to wipe the grin off my face. The soundstage has opened up so much, that I now perceive insane depth, width and I can hear sounds coming from behind me regularly. And it’s not that I was not happy with the soundstage before. Yet today I am blown away. Imaging is also much sharper. What happened??? Is this the NPX300 breaking in? Can it have such a dramatic effect? I remember breaking in my XPS DR in the past and it got better but it was gradual. I’m experiencing a night and day change from one day to the next here.

When I updated to the 333/332 with and extra NPX so I had one on both boxes, all ex dem kit, it did take some time to fully settle in. Probably about a week if memory serves well and I experienced the effect you describe, that sudden leap in SQ.
Have you considered getting an NPX TT for your NVC TT?

I don’t have space for an NPX TT at the moment. I was thinking that the NVC already gets clean power from the NPX 300, not sure an NPX TT is going to provide a sonic benefit in this configuration.

I have the NPX TT in my system with two NPX 300s on my 333 and 332. I think it makes a worthwhile difference to the NVC TT. I do know the problems of space though for extra boxes, as I have no more space either, that being said I am very happy with my system so not a big issue for me.

Recently found the 222 losing album art a lot while streaming with Apple airplay. Setting in Naim App (out at moment, can’t remember exact name) brings it back, then few tracks later it goes again!

Tried Chromecast with Amazon Music (seldom use) and that no longer works at all. Chromecast comes up on 222 display but no tracks play.

Anyone else suffered these problems?
Life was easier when I used Roon and Tidal but mainly rediscovering CDs again recently
