The Naim New Classic Range - Part 2

Hi @SjMj ,

Muting
NAC 332 or NSC 222 connected to a legacy NAP power amp going in and out of standby is absolutely fine.

The pre-amp output section of the new classic products ‘hard mute’ (short circuit) with a ‘normally closed’ relay. i.e. the relay contacts are closed muting the output without any power at all.

Max volume
Max volume limits can be set on both NSC 222 and NAC 332.
NSC 222 - go to the app settings.

NAC 332 - press and hold the mute button, the LEDs around the volume control change, then rotate the volume to the desired max, press and hold mute again to store.

FYI…Both NSC and NAC can also have their relative input sensitives adjusted independently. i.e. boost phono if quieter than streaming etc.

Volume sliders
All new classic products with a volume control can have an app slider volume.

The new volume controls use resistor ladders and relays to pick the volume level. This way the microprocessors know the volume and push this information back to the app. Improved sound quality, longer life, precise volume levels and channel balance. Developed for Statement, engineered for new classic.

Cheers
Steve

What gave it away :+1:

Basel is in Switzerland.

I am also in Switzerland and interested in this discount.

Hi @BackToNaim,

No degradation, it works well; there is no conversion happening.

The single ended output of the SN3 behaves similar to the balanced impedance output but without the external noise pick up rejection.

Personally I am not interested by the 222. And the new streaming platform not particularly, as I stream only local files. But if I was streaming Qobuz and Tidal….I would not keep my Nds.
Nd555 one day, maybe, but too expensive for me now.

Hi @anon19832906 ,

Excuse the short reply, here’s the big changes.

NAC 252 → NAC 332 differences.

Both use:

  • Fly by wire relays for inputs selection
  • Similar filter sections with custom filter caps (NAC 332 has a new first gain stage due to balanced inputs)
  • Simple class-A discrete transistor circuits with good PSUs
  • Matched and custom parts

NAC 332:

  • Uses a ladder volume control - improved sound Q, precise level control via app, precise channel balance
  • Has the new output stage that also doubles as the headphone amplifier. Can drive long leads
  • Local voltage regulation
  • Easier to customise settings like input mapping, input sensitivity, max volume
  • Zigbee remote control - no line of sight needed
  • App control - links via ZigBee to the NSS 333

Hi @Beer, the supplied new classic XLR to XLR leads are not shielded.

Hi FR,
I too have an NDS and only play music streamed from Tidal. Would the old streaming platform in the NDS actually be holding back sound quality? Apologies for the thread sidetrack. Thanks for your thoughts.

The legacy streamers benefit greatly from transcoding to wav and streaming lossless which requires a work around. Installing bubblesoft on your network (ie NAS) is a common approach but requires a little effort and you’ll need to use a different control app. I use the Linn control app when streaming Qobuz.

Hi ElMarko - thanks for that. Unfortunately, I’m hopeless technically - plugging in something and turning it on is about my limit

An ND5XS2 would do the trick.

I use Audirvana studio and Qobuz with my NDS. Easy to get going and sounds much better than Tidal native. To me this is a bigger sound upgrade than using NDX2 as a streaming platform on NDS.

Hi Slamdam - thanks for that, really appreciated. Sounds very promising and I’ve just discovered the thread regarding NDS workarounds with you guys. Will look at it some more. Thankfully I’ve got a good friend who might be able to help me…are you there Professor M?

With Audirvana you just install it on a computer on the same network, launch it, log in with your Qobuz account. Make sure NDS is selected as output. Play and enjoy. They offer a 2 weeks trial. You might need to play around with settings in Audirvana if you have some issues going on.

Yes. The new platform improves streaming online, so Tidal. You can improve by using for example Audionirvana on a Mac Mini. But I am not qualified here to help you on that. Try with the search part.
@simon.pepper can help, or other.
Or you can buy a second hand Nd5xs2 and use the Nds as a dac only. Or wait till the Nd555 prices will drop.

It seems to be trendy at the moment to plug a tiny Wiim pro into the legacy streamers providing a simple solution for Roon and Quobuz for the less technical of us. I am very technical but if I were interested, this is the solution I would choose. After 30yrs of computers networks and the cloud I’m done with all that. I tolerate just the minimum tech in my house to get the music out. No offence to any of the techies out there.

Hi @Django84 I have no problem streaming Tidal to my NDS.

The native implementation is ok, but doesn’t cater for Tidal Masters, which are MQA encoded. I use my NDS as part of a Roon system, where the NDS is presented as an Endpoint and the Roon Core manages all the interfacing to the internet service, plus providing support for Tidal Masters, up to 24/96 (which caters for the majority of the Tidal Masters offered).
The UPnP Bridge which provides the interface to Roon on behalf of the NDS, provides the NDS with a WAV stream for any PCM format, and DSD64 for any bitstream format.
Plus you also get a much better interface for your local library, if you have one.

The deed is done, just fired up. I’m suitably impressed already and beyond happy with the change.

Certainly looks a good pairing (apart from protective film but easily remedied :joy:).
Interested to hear your thoughts compared to previous set up, in due course, although my 200 gear hit ground running according to my cloth ears.
Enjoy .

Well spotted, I literally plugged it in (kids tennis lesson and dinner in the middle) and took a photo!
It’s a brand new unit, never played through till today, considering that it’s pretty damn good, importantly it works favourably with the existing speakers and room setup as a bonus.
I had the foresight to measure the height of the DSM and order medium Fraim legs at the same time thankfully.
More to come as you know…
