We often watch films and concerts on the tv. Music video’s are great through the Naim system😊
Quite remarkable, I have just had a wonderful listen to California Soil by London Grammar. What’s so noticeable is just how quiet the system is, there’s a real difference in the background, it’s eerily quiet allowing the music to flow through. It’s been playing for a week now, I haven’t played it as much as I wanted to but it gets better day by day. Everyday there’s more detail, clarity and sheer musicality.
It’s very different to what I remember of the old system and the old room. I made many changes including a new transport for the 555 so I am not surprised it’s taking a while to settle down, it was quite painful for a few days last week, almost thick and sluggish at times. I am sure the room is having an effect, it can sound quite hollow at times but I am sure a few more furnishings will help.
In the meantime, there is more listening required
Always have a lot of time for your judgement PB but London Grammar stretching this…
Hi PB, my first thought when I saw your photos was to hang a big thickish tapestry (as in big) on your top front wall over and beyond your 808s. I’m sure that alongside more soft furnishings could reduce the reverb you are referring to. The 2 openings behind your speakers should certainly help with relieving low frequency pressurisation working as vents ie good bass Just my 2 pence…. and OH YES DRing works! ATB Peter
That’s an interesting one Peter, how would that work with the tv between the speakers?
Just for you, I will play some Metallica tomorrow
No no the wall over your TV, as I suspect it it structured as a pitched ceiling under roof. It looks quite a big surface area. Could you post a photo please taken from your back wall and up? ATB Peter
Yep, it’s quite a large vaulted ceiling. We are thinking about putting a couple of pictures above the joist.
Wow, that’s a bit of a vault. If it could be something absorbent would help. GIK does panels, which looks like a canvas print of any photos as per your choice. I’ll shut up now Peter
I played this yesterday, it’s a great work out and test on a nice Naim system.
Not sure how to tell you this PB, but someone has shrunk your album. It won’t sound much on that wonderful TMS of yours.
The NAT 01 and CD 555 are doing most of the running in duties, the TMS needs a good service. That the next project
Finally, the mystery has revealed itself. I have been struggling over the last two weeks to see what all the DR fuss was about. My system has been flat and lifeless for the last two weeks, it was so bad this morning Karen asked if we had just bought a Muso! She even said it’s nothing like the old system. Hence why I have been quiet on here.
I have questioned the room, the power supply, the set up, everything. However, the 500 has just blown a fuse, typically on a bank holiday weekend when your dealer is closed, however Pete being Pete had supplied me with many spare fuses nd luckily I had a couple of spare 500 fuses.
A quick change of fuses, and at last my system is back, boy have I missed it over the last couple of weeks, musical enjoyment has been limited but from the first track since powering up there is so much more life nd vitality. So much more detail and dynamics. I am no longer listening through cotton wool. I can hear cymbals again and there is so much more attack in the mid range.
Isn’t it amazing how much one little piece affects the whole system?
While happy that you have found the apparent issue, it is somewhat disconcerting that a fuse can be faulty yet still work. I always thought that fuses were “all or none” that is they either are working fine or were blown. Do we need to periodically change fuses?
Whilst not exactly the same, I decided to install the latest Innuos update (from 2.0.8 to 2.0.10) and wow it’s back to 2.0.5. The only reason for mentioning this is that with this crazy hobby these things happen. However, the burn in of the 552/500 is well documented, while the Innuos is not.
Playing Peter Gabriel’s eponymous 1987 album, it has all the wow it had when I only had a 252/300 in DR. These systems work on a knife edge.
Phil
Never even thought about that Mark. There was no spare in the fuse box. I have obviously replaced one before. Fortunately I have a small stock of fuses in case this happens.
Well, it’s a very different system to the one we had this morning and I am not an expert on such things so I can’t comment too much but I am certainly happier now
Cripes PB, what’s happened to your amp is weird! At least, to a very non-electrically literate person! What you have described seems to be a significant fall off in sound quality as a fuse goes through a slow motion failure. Not something I would ever have had on my radar. This has not been one of your smoothest naim experiences what with all the delays - fingers crossed all the bits and pieces are in place now to allow you both to enjoy your system.
Peter
