Time for a change?

That’s why I don’t like change nowadays Peter, too much uncertainty… I like to be able to just listen to the system without any thoughts on what it’s doing or not doing.

I did make a lot of changes, the room changed, the power supply changed, power cables changes and the kit was serviced and DR’d so it’s not surprising it’s all taking a while to settle down.

Same here! But you have raised a doubt in my mind about fuses. Like @jsaudio, I always thought fuses were either working or failed. My system is not dissimilar to yours and I do find that it can sound a bit lacklustre at times, particularly at low levels. You’ve got me thinking (or worried!).

Apology in advance for my (silly, maybe) question: how did you know that the fuse was the problem with flat and weak sound of your system?

Thanks,
David

I guess it was because before changing the fuse the sound was weak and flat and after changing the fuse the sound had a lot more life and vitality.

Unless there was something else going on that I am completely unaware of?

Thank you, but maybe I explained not properly.
How did you realize the fuse needed to be changed?
Bye,
David

It was the lack of sound from the speakers and no green light on the front that led me to believe the fuse wasn’t working properly.

It was fortunate that the source of the problem was so obvious!

I remember the first time hearing the title track and wondering what the hell was going on  Great album. Must sound pretty good through your system @Polarbear!

It made me wonder what else you might like and what other tracks might sounds like through your system e.g. do you like AudioSlave? Show Me How To Live would be an interesting listen.

Its a great album, very dynamic and yes of course it sounds good on my system. I have a great liking for “Ride the Lightning” their first album, it made a great impression on me.

I like a wide variety of music and I used to post many on the “what are you listening to” thread in the music room.

You did the right thing getting it all DR’ed at the same time. I did 500 first followed by 552 believing that 500 was the bigger upgrade.

Both took ages to burn in but I did use a burn in CD from Tellerium Q which you may want to use to speed up the process. Basically it goes through the entire frequency range. It doesn’t have to be on too loud, so I had it on 24/7.

Actually I found 552 was the best value for money. It is this that I found really lowers the noise floor the most. So it produced greater clarity, better imaging and 3D effect and brought out the subtleties in music more.

500 DR upgrade produced greater dynamics, and far better bass.

Be patient I am sure it will sound amazing in such a great room once it is fully on song. Give it 2 to 3 months if you are only listening to music a few hours a day. Otherwise consider a burn in disk.

Thanks for that, I appreciate the feedback.

I was a little surprised as to how bad it was after a few days, certainly not a 500 system. I could clearly hear the difference, the noise floor is certainly lower, separation and sound staging is also improved. The bass is much better but there’s still a lot missing and having changed everything it’s hard to point the finger at a particular piece of kit.

It is improving day by day and it’s only been three weeks. I had hoped the first week would have been much better but as Peter did, I must be patient.

I will get far more listening time in the next few weeks as I am having an operation tomorrow and will need some stay at home time after that. So I am grateful the system is up and running and I can get plenty of listening time.

I know there is more to come, cymbals are still very recessed and there’s plenty of detail yet to appear buts it’s getting there

Best wishes for the op. @Polarbear. I’ve been running in a 555, 552 and now 300 all DRs over the last few months.

Patience is indeed the watch-word.

Hope the op goes well and I wish you a swift recovery.

I recently acquired a exdem NAP500DR and it has taken many weeks to really come on song, even though the dealer would have put plenty of hours on it.

All your kit has been serviced and DR’d so it will take a while to sound its best, which I am sure you are aware.

Have fun listening to music during your recovery.

Nigel, hoping nothing too serious - you’ve had more than your fair share in recent times - and wishing you a successful and speedy recovery.

Peter

It would have been interesting to see how the upgraded kit would have sounded in the old room…

Thanks Peter, hopefully this is the last one for a long while. I have finally had my gallbladder out after an 18 month wait. It’s gone well. I just need to get over it,

Some good music will help

So would? I recon, when it settles down there will be a big improvement in sound quality
