Hi all.
I recently acquired a vintage Naim set.
This includes 2 Naim Nap 110s
1 Naim Hi-cap and 1 Nac 42 (I believe it’s been updated to the 42.5 by the presence of the 5 pin din in the 4th slot.
I’ve encountered an issue and trying to troubleshoot what might be wrong.
The Nac 42 pre will not power on through the Hi-cap but will through the 4 pin slot 3 of both the Nap 110s however will will not produce any sound from the phono or any other inputs on either. I have included an image of the rear of the units.
Richard’s post above will give you all the info you need. The Naim connections can be a bit confusing to start with, but the SNAIC4 is the cable between the 42.5 and 110.
Interesting setup you have there. It looks like it was part of an active system at one time, given the B and T (bass and treble) labels on the 110s.
I don’t think it makes much difference here though? Might be interesting after it’s all working if the units are close to either side of the change, for interest’s sake
This is how I joined everything up initially. 2 Snaic 4s to the Hi-cap 1-2 and the 5 pin out to the 42.5. These are the cables it was supplied with.
I suspected it might have been from an active system. Would that mean I’d need speakers with active crossovers for it to work like a Linn aktiv system?
Indeed. The 110s are cracking amps and only one of them is likely to be needed. A service (unless recently done) and the OP will have a very nice classic Naim amp setup there.
The early NAP110s had a Bulgin mains socket. For the first year (‘79), they also used a sleeve that was a little bit shallower too, same with the early NAC42 - the "short-chassis’ or “short-sleeve”.
I wonder whether it’s not been used active, instead set up as bi- amps with each 110 configured with the input signal paralleled across both channels. Otherwise, where is the active crossover?
Need good internal pictures of all the kit to see what is going on.
You’d need a Naim Naxo which sits between the 42.5 and 110s. These are designed to work with specific speakers, usually from Linn and Naim of that era.
I’d get the basic system working first. A DIN5 link plug in the 42.5 and a SNAIC4 between one of the 110s and the 42.5.
Can you post a picture of all the cables you have - it’s not clear from the picture what you’ve got.
I can only upload 1 image at a time and can’t post links so here is a broken link to an album of the cables and internals :- imgur(.)com/a/j8AIKcf
One of the Nap 110s the kettle plug variant’s Alan bolts have seized and rounded out so unable to get inside l. Will need to take it to a black smith or something such to get it removed.
You can upload images directly to your post - no need to use an image hosting site. Assuming you have the images on a phone, simply copy and paste each image to the reply text box and wait while the image uploads.
Those allen screws can be a devil to shift if they haven’t been touched in a long time unfortunately. The best tip I can give you is to get yourself a pro-grade set of allen keys and try again. Cheaper ones are invariably not a tight enough fit to avoid rounding the sockets.
In the meantime you can open the preamp and try posting an image. Good luck
Because my account is new it would only let me upload 1 image per post so was trying to be more efficient.
I’m any case here is a picture of the internals of the pre amp.
