Unhappy with the new NAIM update

Same effects occur on my NDX5S2.

Welcome to the club of outlaws

Here is my ND5 XS 2 whilst streaming Qobuz with Audirvāna

I do not experience shrill anymore. I did with 3.10.0…

Fortunately, I never got round to updating my ND555 to 3.10.0; it’s still on 3.8.4. I sincerely hope that Naim manage to achieve option 1 for those adversely impacted by the latest updates. Otherwise, option 2 would seem to be the only alternative.
The problem is, how can one guarantee that the SQ of an alternative streamer, bought following a positive demo, will remain unaffected by any future updates to the firmware. Is there any reason to think that a streamer from Linn or Auralic is any more future proof in this respect?
If not, then is the answer - as Simon suggests - to have a separate digital transport and DAC. Would that entirely eliminate the potential impact of any future change in the firmware or merely lessen the risk?

And Neil and Stevesky are frequently here. I doubt they didn’t read this thread. But maybe they only respond when they are called and don’t read the forum. It may also be that.

So how you explain the noise shaping? You frequently talked about that. But I feel I haven’t understood well that thing.

Not sure how it can help the members here. Personally I would be upset by your response, if sharing the same unhappiness for the last firmware. But then I translate your response in my french language.

@JP45 you are a lucky man! Having somewhat of a computer hardware/software background, I should have consulted the forum before updating, when I returned to the UK in early December. Fundamental error on my part😭 However, I have never had any issues with a FW update previously, so had the utmost confidence in Naim.

After this experience, I would definitely go down the separate Transport/DAC/Clock route. FW changes can still alter the streaming Sound Signature but I believe it would be easier to pinpoint the issue with discrete units. Not that I would ever again automatically accept and install a FW update. Except of course on the 555 3.10.1 which definitely needs a good fettle.

Sorry to hear this problem affecting your ND555. Considering that every Naim streamer is also a dac have you tried to “ isolate “ the two parts? I mean if you play music via a computer,a usb drive or a cd player connected to the streamer is the sound still unlistenable?

It’s similar in German translation

Really? This is also not very helpful!
What will you have done, if after all the danish perfect cabling that transformed you system, this all goes south through a FW update given by the manufacturer without…?
Think about it for a moment - really

Sometimes you are really hard to get. There is some part of infection - it is and it is, what happens when things turn out to be long term.
But there is much real problems inside - even if all of us are muted, the nd555 will sound the same as it is now.
There are some long years trained ears (not me) dealing with it.

Well let’s all be honest here it’s easily sorted.
If you feel you’re not getting anywhere with it all, then just sell it. Plenty of choice out there.

Yeah - good resume!
But some of us like and love the naim sound and would like to keep a full naim system.
Selling all (incl amps) and going another route is also an option!
But than all begins again - I was so happy that I reached a point where I am not heading for the next update…

Yes thanks, there have been all sorts of work arounds tried with varying success. There was also a block diagram of the signal processing path posted on this thread that helped to clarify component/FW interaction.

Streaming from my local server is much better than Qobuz. Fiddling with Input/ground/cables/switches has helped but I am still a long way from the sound signature of 3.8.x

Exactly as posted earlier today…fix 3.10.x for 555 or move on…hopefully Naim will do us proud.:+1:

I can see that with this 1000 post un happy thread.

Here’s a suggestion for those that are experiencing this “shrill” issue. Would it be possible for you to take your kit to your Naim dealer? If these dealers have audition rooms, hook up your equipment and have everyone listen to it. It would be very interesting to hear how your kit sounds there, and get the opinions of those present on the sound. This would be a concrete step in the right direction of addressing this issue.

I hope that @drago and others will create a support ticket and ask for help from Naim. That sounds like the most logical thing to do. If necessary add some sense of urgency by asking the dealer to also contact Naim. Maybe a fresh manual re-install of the firmware will help.
