A Cosworth no doubt? Good investment. Great fun to drive too I bet. My landrover Defender 110 2015 is worth £10k more than I paid for it too. A keeper.
Correct. And yes ![]()
Bought in 1995.
Nice. What I generally like so much about the Golf is that it’s one of the few cars you simply can’t go wrong with.
I hate to do this but, FWIW….
The VW Golf Mk8 is one of the least reliable family cars, according to our latest What Car? Reliability Survey. The diesel version finished in last place out of 25 models in the family car category with a score of 70.4%, while the petrol version finished in 22nd place with a score of 84.1%. Most of the car’s issues were focused on the infotainment and other electrical systems, with diesels also suffering gearbox glitches.

Oh, is that right? Good to know. I was going to switch to a Golf recently, but I decided to keep my current car—it’s not even that old.
I am never quite sure what to make of these surveys, but VW despite their marketing and reputation don’t always star. I have owned a few cars but never a VW so cannot speak from experience.

Which one do you prefer?
My brother’s early experience with a brand new Mk8 Golf was in line with some aspects of that survey-the steering wheel was no longer talking to the rest of the car. New wheel needed, luckily under warranty. In all other respects he and his wife love the car (a GTD which may no longer be available) and have hung onto it.
I hope it wasn’t quite as scary as that sounds!
Top must be the GT3 (no surprise there with its 4.0 normally aspired flat 6). Next I go GTS then Carrara T.
Absolutely, the Carrera and Carrera T, being turbocharged engines are surprisingly good though. My 718 Spyder N.A. 4.0 is more muffed in comparison.
I’ll take any or all of them, but GT3 is my favourite.
It still steered! The ‘buttons’ didn’t work though. Maybe the airbag wouldn’t have worked either.
I like his Golf but I think back to his mark2 GTI 3 door 8 valve some 30+ years ago and it felt more substantial.
The 992.1 GT3 has to be the choice soundwise, but even a more conventional 992.2 Carrera S sounds nice and more “discreet”.
I don’t like the 992.2 Carrera GTS t-hybrid sound, but the rumbling cold start somehow reminds me of the 1988 Carrera or the 1984 SC-RS.

Anecdotal only, but I recall there were criticisms of the 4.0 litre 718’s exhaust being overly silenced - particularly when compared with its predecessor. Dodgy memory and all - I think if you look back through ‘TheCarGuys’ youtube channel, when he bought his 718, one of the first things he did was modify hte exhaust. I think it was just the rear sections but no idea if such mods have implications on Porsche warranty. No harm in having a look I suppose.

The 991.2 GT3 by some margin gets my vote - it would have been interesting to hear the 992 GT3 next to it. The GTS almost sounds broken by comparison! Quite liked the sound of the base and T models.
Of course, sound is one thing, how they drive is quite another - that GT3 has to be relatively thrashed to match the truckloads of torque on offer from the turbo charged engines at quite low revs. Having said that, the 991.2 GT3 seems to have acquired almost cult status amongst 911’s with quite incredible residuals here in the UK.

I can thoroughly recommend the Ring Automotive TYREINFLATE 1000 Rapid Digital Tyre Inflator, available on the big river for £50 and waaaay superior to anything I’ve used in the past.
Oh, and the GT3 is the only one that actually sounds like a proper Porsche!
It’s a 992.1 GT3
Even with after markets mufflers It has not a nice tone. The 981 3.4 and 3.8 GT4 sound much better with a higher pitch tone
I may have lost the plot!!
