What are you listening to in 2020 and WHY might anyone be interested?

Just reading the ‘Half time report: your best music of 2020 so far’ thread and one of @Nick.Lees suggestions reminded me that I had this one saved for further investigation based on previous reviews. Now downloaded from bandcamp and enjoying some deeply hypnotic, motorik electronica!

Listened to this earlier today. Grandaddy - Last Place. Very good - it reminds me a lot of their album from several years ago, The Sophtware Slump.

Another one from earlier today. Lambchop - Flotus. I’m still struggling with their recent albums which have a marked change in direction compared to their earlier works.

I’ve been listening to quite a lot of funk and soul recently, so I fancied a complete change in direction. Just played CD3 (And in the Endless Pause There Came the Sound of Bees) of this 7 CD Johann Johannsson retrospective. Very relaxing.

You’re right, it is quite hypnotic. I wasn’t sure at first, but it really grew on me.

I think I know what you mean Neil. Strangely Flotus was my first experience of lambchop. So I am now exploring the back catalogue in the opposite direction to you. I must say I love it all. Is it the auto tuned vocals?

I know it puts many people off, but I don’t mind auto tuned vocals. I’ve got the Bon Iver album, 22 A Million (I think it’s called) and that has a lot of auto tuned vocals, but the melodies are so good. I don’t mind electronic / keyboard led music. It just seems as if Kurt Wagner isn’t writing strong enough songs. Perhaps it’s me - I do love Americana-type music with guitars, dobro, fiddle and the like and the earlier Lambchop albums are in that vein, albeit with their own quirky take on that genre. I saw them live after the release of their Is A Woman record and it is one of my all time favourite concerts. Maybe in time these recent albums will finally click if I persevere with them. I seem to recall the last two albums were favourably reviewed by the critics.

Dion - Blues with Friends

Streaming on Qobuz (44.1/16)… I saw this mentioned in the past couple of days and wanted to take it out for a spin and the opening track with How Bonamassa is sounding pretty nice. Looking forward to the rest of the album.

Gomez. Bring it on. Bought originally on cd but more recently on double vinyl. They put the last track alone on side 4. My original thoughts were that it was a nod to Blonde on blonde. Maybe not but I think there was some humour there. An absolute classic from the Southport lads.
