Van Morrison - Born To Sing : No Plan B.
Had a bit of a nostalgia fest today spinning the L42 discs today - I recalled getting invited backstage after a gig in Bristol, because my friend had written some fan mail to Mark about his playing style. He (and the rest of the band) were super nice and interesting to talk to - we even discussed the first releases of their music on CD, comparing it to the vinyl! I still have a program signed by all four members of the band.
By the way, I heard a conversation on my car radio between Mark King and Marcus Miller from the last JazzFM Awards, and they are going to be working together! I think they mentioned it will be a tribute album for bassist Larry Graham.
Heard the great live version of ‘Cheap Sunglasses’ on this compilation in Fopp in Covent Garden about 5 years ago and thought it was great. Had heard of ZZ Top years ago but had not become consciously aware of them until then.

Oh dear another dilemma. A few weeks ago the 50th anniversary issue slipped out.
I was a confirmed Bowie mix fan given the Iggy mix of a few years ago had clarity but the dials were all pushed to the red and you had to bolt the speakers down when listening.
Now a 2023 Iggy mix version in Hi Res is quite awesome. The first track ‘Search & Destroy’ is still a bit muffled but after that it is astonishing.
I think I am an Iggy mix fan now.
2CD version.
Interesting booklet notes and both mono and stereo versions.
Still never quite sure what I think about the jug sound…
I go backwards and forwards with both mixes depending on my mood. Whichever one, it must be played loud!
Still prefer Fun House though.
Iona Brown & The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra Schubert + Mendelssohn

This came out last week. A compilation of artists from the London Jazz scene. A Blue Note release
The first track won’t be to everyone’s taste but there’s a lot of good stuff on here.
Really wanted to listen to the whole of Turandot, but am very conscious that this is my last day so have moved on.
Finally playing some Rush. A Farewell to Kings followed by Hemispheres. For me, these 2 albums must be played one after the other, simply because Cygnus X1 books 1 and 2 follow perfectly when you do this😊
MY GOD! Xanadu sounds INCREDIBLE…
I just love the tone of James Williamson’s guitar on Raw Power.
In terms of guitar tone only two other guitarists/albums come close:-
Earl Slick on David Live
Marc Aaron on John Cale’s Sabotage/Live
Will you be buying one?
I’m not sure what I will be buying yet @Gazza…
At the very least it will be an ND5, but negotiations will commence tomorrow re NSC options (trade in values a factor here) and another listen to the ATC SCM 40a’s driven by the NSC hopefully. When we tested that combo here, the 40’s had been in the Van all day and were cold as cold could be.
Replacing my entire Naim system and Speakers with the NSC 222 and the 40a’s is a definite possibilty though…
