Critics rate Pet Sounds but I just dont get the Beach Boys at all…just my opinion

At school we had to sing The Sloop John B in music class and I used to hate it then and nothings changed.

I’m a bit of a Beach boys fan, but don’t worry, won’t hold it against you 
, love early Beach boys up to pet sounds, then went a bit hit and miss, but that hasn’t stopped me owning 99% of what they have released, the Beatles all the way for me.

What did he do to really innovate
It all sounds like surf pop to me .The Byrds evolved getting more psychedelic
