Just got this on 4K Blu-ray. Fabulous.
I saw the latest Star Wars movie on friday and haven’t recovered from it yet…
Initially I posted this in the wrong thread. Apologies.
We went to see Cats on Saturday. It’s a very odd film. At one level it’s basically the musical, which we loved, with a cast of well known actors and some excellent dancing and singing. The CGI is impressive, but not quite right.
I came away with two thoughts. Firstly the fact I had a good sleep for about 20 mins (my wife claims it was longer but I disbelieve that) suggests that it failed to grab my attention the way a good movie does. The second is that there were aspects of the production that just didn’t work for me and you can’t unsee what you have just seen.
My wife thought it was great and was highly enthusiastic. My 7 year old granddaughter who saw it the same day made the single comment: “There wasn’t much talking.”
So was it so bad it was good or so bad it was bad? I’m not sure. It certainly got the big song Memory re-implanted in my mind for 24 hours!

We went to a screening of the 2016 ROH performance of the Nutcracker at the local fleapit the other day. I was a tad disappointed with Act I (didn’t think the toys were sufficiently involved (Peter Wright’s choreography). However Act II was superb with an outstanding grand pas de deux. Overall, I would recommend it.
We nearly bought tickets for Cats that night - having read/heard numerous reviews since then, I glad we didn’t.
Every year the “Banff Mountain Film Festival” comes to the UK’s cinemas around May - this (imho) is a must-see event. Seriously. You will be amazed by both the activities and the photography.
Look out for it in your area …
Star Wars - liked it, 3D could have been more extraverte
Little Women. Despite the critics, please don’t rush unless you want super-saturated Hollywood colour and multiple flashbacks masquerading as so-called innovative film-making.
Couldn’t agree more - overrated
1917 IMAX cinema. A work of art. The single take is used perfectly and brings you into the journey with them. Hard to criticise, so I won’t.
Cats has been slammed by the critics, but it has been reported that after general release Tom Hooper recut the film and played with the CGI and then it was re-issued to cinemas. I understand that is very unusual.
Anyway we went to see it again at the weekend and I think it is much-improved. It holds together better and the CGI is much less intrusive. The cinema was fairly full compared with when we first saw it a day after it was released, when there were a handful of us watching it.
Overall I think that if you like the original music, then it is now quite enjoyable and worth seeing.

We also got round to seeing Little Women. It helps if you have read at least the first book and otherwise the multiple flashbacks and intercutting between storylines in different times could be quite hard to follow. But it’s an enjoyable and unchallenging couple of hours and very pretty. However it’s not something I would want to see a second time.

Just to note if you’re thinking of going to see 1917, don’t watch the trailer. It has spoilers in it. Just watched it this morning and I’m glad I didn’t see it before the film.
Went to see JoJo Rabbit last night. Two hours of my life I’ll never get back!
Although mildly amusing in places, it failed miserably in its attempt to satirise. Everything it touched upon has been done so much better in other films (The Producers, Inglorious Bastards, The Book Thief, to name but a few).
Once again, an example of why we shouldn’t trust film critics!
Peter Bradshaw in Grauniad gave this 1 star so just goes to show (once again) you need to pick the right critic!
Bradshaw has given 5* reviews to our next two outings later this week (Little Women and 1917), so will let you know if he’s the right critic for us!
Off to see 1917 tonight so let’s see. I enjoyed LW but thought it a bit overrated - more 4 star than 5 star but YMMV. Enjoy your films
1917, last night. It’s immersive, spellbinding, brilliant. I wasn’t looking forward to it as a one-take film having seen Birdman a few weeks ago and been thoroughly distracted by it, but this works superbly well.
Also my son’s in it, briefly. ![]()
Whilst I’m not really a Guy Ritchie fan, I thoroughly enjoyed The Gentleman - we went in not knowing anything about the movie and ha da great time.
It was only during the end credits that I realised that Hugh Grant was in it, I was even more surprised when I realised which character he was playing!
Just back from 1917 - every bit as good as critics say. Hard to see it not winning best picture at Oscars
