What was the last bit of gear you bought in 2024?

That’s what I use. Great value and sound excellent.

Hope you enjoy your new system Nigel. I’ll be surprised if you don’t.

It’s the Pontus 15, only have about 5 hours on it, the first little bit it was grainy sounding in the highs and bass was loose.
But after a few hours it has become really smooth in the highs nice and extended and bass has become tight and punchy. And the sound stage has really grown.
I sold my qutest to purchase power supply for pulse mini almost a year ago. So going off memory, but Pontus has bigger sound stage and better instrument placement. It has a really natural sound that’s very enjoyable to listen to. I’ll give an update once it has some time to settle in.

Back in 2008, the cantilever on my Dynavector 20X2 broke. I started looking for someone who could rebuild the cartridge and ended up with a rebuilt Linn Troika, a Naim Audio 52/Supercap/250 and a pair of Naim SBL speakers. They have served me well for the past sixteen years and along the way, I added a streaming setup, using a pair of Intel Mini PCs and a Naim DAC/XPS.

Fast forward sixteen years and the audio dandruff on the carpet from my SBL grilles is becoming tiresome. I start looking for a set of replacement grilles and gaskets, together with someone who can fit the latter.

This evening I purchased a pre-owned pair of Naim Ovator S-400 speakers. ‘Great oaks from little acorns grow’ I guess and now it’s happened twice!

The Vessel R3SM, the latest and arguably the most advanced Excel ES-70 derivative up to date. Initial impression is very positive, seems like it will push my Goldring G1042 to the secondary system.

I’ve used Mogami speaker cable (offered by designa…) for years and haven’t really found anything cost effective to trump it. I do also have a couple of Mogami interconnects but have found Atlas ones ‘better’ at an acceptable cost.

Used but serviced Nad 3020i for my conservatory. Very very basic system with a node as source and JBL L52’s. Honestly in this space it sounds so good.

Got a second hand Belden 1303E Cat6a, CatSnake Ethernet today. No doubt it is uplifting the sound. Not that it should be hard to better the very cheap Kjell &Company cable I had for a bit too long, after switching from wifi on the NDX2.

Presumably bought from mr Blackbird @Blackbird on this forum.

This, the Yamaha YH-5000SE, was an impromptu purchase on my last day in Japan. I was walking around the Akiba strip with my patient wife being dragged into countless otaku shops when I stumbled upon E-Earphones which has all manner of headphones for sale and for demo. I made my way to the third floor, saw these available for a try and decided to give them a spin as I had considered originally picking up a pair but shelved the notion after reading about how polarising the sound is.

Well after a couple of tracks (fed by a Ferrum DAC and iFi amp) I was won over. Despite the gear being several rungs below my own system I was smitten by the palpable, meaty sound that just had me wanting to keep listening. The price was tempting, too tempting with the 10% tax removal and weak Yen versus the Aussie dollar, and after a detour to Yodobashi Camera to mull it over while buying a giant Evangelion model kit I caved and returned to purchase it.

It’s currently running in and needs looooooots of burn-in but already I’m loving the detail and the remarkable “out of the head” soundstage. It is quite a step up from my (recabled) Sennheiser HD-800s which sounds insubstantial and slightly artificial by comparison and shares elements with my Stax SR-009. However, what’s surprised me the most is how much it reminds me of my beloved Kudos Titan T505 stand mount speakers in the way it presents an absolutely cohesive sound that draws you into the music while stepping out of the way. And this is with the stock cable going through a basic QED extention cable. No doubt things will improve with a Lavricable Grand aftermarket cable like with my 800s.

So far, so good. The horror stories about these headphones are bizarre in hindsight although I can kind of see how they can be not too some people’s tastes as they are not as neutral as some might prefer.

Oh, and special mention must go to the included stand and the restrained but excellent packaging the headphones come with, even if hauling it back with me on the plane was a nerve-wracking experience.

I am updating my digital front end, and today I received a previously loved Antipodes K40 music server. It is replacing my Roon Nucleus (rev. A). The K40 is bigger (and heavier) than I thought it would be. It willl not fit in my Naim Fraim! I’ll figure something out.

A set of tall legs?

The Antipodes K40 is 37cm deep and the Fraim’s glass is 34cm deep.

Tall legs will not help.

Cheers!

@Mistio is that ps5 ? :grin:

Yes, it is or as I like to call it “Lan Disconnected”.

Or “how dare you shut me down improperly” ( you totally should have foreseen that 3am 30 second power cut)

Nice laptop :+1:

I have one of those.
