You are halfway there. ![]()
Ssssh! It sounds very good.
I plan a 2nd, end of year as Christmas present after I finish 13 week building job for customer.
Knowing me it will arrive before ![]()
It sounds amazing. This is the sound I was always after!
Bet you can’t wait to get your 6 pack. I had my 17 year old son over at the weekend and he is very into music and my system and he loved the change. He said it sounded fuller and integrated rather than just being extra bass.
We all found that the bass rolls off nicely, widens the soundstage and makes the music sound more natural.
@Dan_M, I’m a bit intrigued. What was it that made you think a sub (or 2) would make the music sound more natural ? Only asking because we both have Sopra N2’s and mine have oodles of very tight and graphic bass. Maybe it’s a “room” thing ?
I replaced my subwoofer which died and was used for Home Theatre duties only.
Alot of forumites are using sub woofers with their speakers on here. I decided to go for one which I can use for Home Theatre and my Naim set up.
After extensive research, I decided upon a Rel S812 which Rel recommends with our speakers.
The sound from the Rel widens the soundstage, sounds more organic with a deep dark bass. It’s early days. I am dialling it in but enjoying the party it has brought to my system.
Look it’s not necessary, but I am enjoying the differences!
Gosh Dan…..thats a Naim demo room and a fair bit more
It sounds better than Naim’s demo room for sure!

My system sounds soo good guys. Listening to Grace Jones Qobuz and deeper bass and wider soundstage is incredible. The thing with the Rel S 812 is not to overdo the bass volume. Set the volume about halfway and crossover less than halfway.
Anyhow it’s all new And I am trying to dial it in. These things take time. Adapting position of sub woofer also.
It’s a bit more than a box upgrade! Sounding unbelievable!
Donald Fagan The Nightfly is one of my test albums. The Rel S812 is pumping nicely! Sounds gorgeous. Deep bass tones rolling off the sublime timbre and velvety tones.
Try one and see if you like it!
Dan can you please explain how the cabling works on the switch to move the sub between the stereo and the AV systems. I’m intrigued. I have a Martín Logan subwoofer but only currently use it in the Home Cinema system. Your system is looking good ![]()
Hi Andy,
It’s a Beresford switch TC 7220 MkII. Not the latest model. There is a Mk111.
So we have terminals for speaker cables for two amplifiers and two sets of speakers.
There are four switches on the fascia of the unit. Amplifier A and B. Speaker 1 and 2.
I have the following set up:
Speaker cables from Anthem MRX1120 Receiver to Amp A terminals.
Speaker cables from Naim Nap 500DR head unit to Amp B terminals.
Speaker cables from Speaker 1 to Focal Sopra 2.
Speaker cables from Speaker 2 to Focal Aria 936s (conservatory).
Sub woofer goes from binding post on Beresford speaker 2. High level connection, right speaker red wire, left speaker yellow wire, black wire for ground floating taped. This can be connected to negative binding post but I get no hum so have left it floating.
The other end of sub woofer cable has neutrik speakon connector.
Effectively the sub woofer is connected diredt to the speakers. But this means I don’t have to cut the original cable and adapt it. I can feed it direct into the switch.
The other option is to connect your sub woofer high level direct to your speakers. This is what I have done, but earlier on in the chain.
I am using the sub with my Av system and Naim system so easily at the push of a button. If I go for 2nd sub I will just connect direct to each speaker.
TBF I would never have looked into doing this if my sub woofer hadn’t died. I’m glad it did as I now have a completely different system to listen to! It’s early days yet and I need to get my head round it and over the initial burst of enthusiasm.
These things take time. However, initial impressions are very very good. It’s a case of getting it to work seamlessly and in an integrated way. So yeah, on drum and bass tracks a big bass sounds great but less so on The Nightfly! It’s a case of balancing things out and making use of the deep base. There’s no point turning the volume up one or two notches. You may as well not have it. I am experimenting with it around half way mark. The crossover is set lower than half way mark at the moment. Tuning it in is trial and error.
PS the maximum loading for amps is 200 watts per channel for Beresford. I would think this won’t be an issue unless you are driving your amp to max Andy. Never been a problem with 500DR or Anthem MRX1120. Both are 140 watts per channel into 8Ohm.
I believe your amp maybe 250 watts per channel. It’s just a switch. No power cable. It’s very useful.
Thank you for that comprehensive description Dan; I will look into this further. ![]()
It’s a case of whether or not your sub has a high level connection that can link to your speakers, rather than your amps. It’s worth looking into.
I intend to give things space and time but I must admit I am considering a 2nd sub already! For music, apparently it’s best to go for 2. @JosquinDesPrez is going for 6 array and already has 4. Lots of information on the forum.
My son wants me to get 6. Lol. And his girlfriend agrees. Personally, I think 2 will be enough. Or just stick as I am. It’s easy to get sucked into something with too much enthusiasm.
You’re very welcome by the way Andy!

Why didn’t you choose the Carbon Special. I find REL Sub design to be too much brand logo and the white woofer looked abit… haha. Sorry personal opinion only. But the Carbon Special is the REL that looked much handsome.
The Carbon Special is $1100 more costly than the S/812. Also The S/510, S/812 and Carbon Special are all discontinued models, so anyone who wants these are limited to NOS if they can find them, or ex-demo and second hand.
The white woofer in the front looks fine to me (and my wife), but one can always run them with the grill on to hide it.
I want to add sub also. Very intrigued on how it can augment the soundstage like what Dan and you say. Some might say Focal Scala no need sub, but I am more interested not in the bass punch and output, but the very strange effect of making the whole music “whole” and fuller. Interesting…
