Like I have said before. It’s not about more bass and more output, it’s about better bass and more space. Do you have a qualified REL dealer nearby. Might be time to give them a visit for a demo.
I have large floor standing speakers that are -3db at 28Hz, but have used stereo subs since before I bought them. I just can’t imagine not using subs now. I once disconnected them and thought the system sounded dead and lifeless by comparison.
I really need to go hear it. 1 question. If adding the sub to a floorstanding like my Scala, will my speaker 11" woofer act as a mid-bass or it still carry on doing the same bass frequency as before .. thus “adding more bass” to the room.. I really hate those booming bass effect..
I also added a REL S/812 about 7 weeks ago - like you and Dan, I have the Sopra 2s. My room is large - at the upper end of what the Sopras were designed for. I wanted to know what adding a high quality sub would bring to the sound. Based on research, I guessed it might add fullness to the sound and smooth out the sound in the upper mid frequencies just a little which I have found can be problematic in a large room.
Adding one sub has been a revelation. I agree with what Dan says. The sound is fuller and I think tonally the sound is more accurate. Mids and upper mids are now really beautiful. The sound has become really well integrated. Low level details are also revealed, making the music sound more real as you can now hear more subtle room cues. On good live recordings the effect is exhilarating. The bass is of very high quality, of course, and integrates very well with the Sopras. Indeed, the beautiful, solid, open sound of the Sopras is maintained even as you now get all of the bottom octave of music.
This is definitely of the order of a box upgrade. I had ordered a second one at the same time as the first, but only received one at first since stock was low in Canada as they were discontinued. My dealer managed to find a second one and I will pick it up in a couple of days. I got a good deal on buying two and am really happy with this purchase. Looking forward to getting the second one up and running!
I got the Rel S812 as it is recommended for my speakers. It’s beautifully made and extremely powerful and I am happy with it. Maybe you should get the carbon special for your Scalas.
The recommended sub for Scalas is No 31. £6500 in UK.
The usual way to add a subwoofer is to set its low pass filter so that it doesn’t produce the same bass frequencies as your main speakers. (Otherwise it would just be a woofer, not a subwoofer!) However the sub is configured, it doesn’t change the signal that is fed to your main speakers, so they still get the same full range signal.
(It is possible to use a special active crossover to relieve the mains of some bass frequencies and allow only the sub to produce these, using either a standalone crossover or one built into the subwoofer, but these are relatively uncommon and certainly not used by Rel.)
Despite this, a well integrated sub can create a perceived improvement it soundstage and other aspects of performance right across the frequency range even if it’s only actually producing low frequency sound. How exactly it achieves this is something I’ve never really understood.
My HRS EXR three-shelf rack has landed at my dealer. They are delivering it on Friday. The rack will be for the 252, Boulder 1108, and my Master Innovation turntable. The turntable and Boulder will additionally sit on HRS isolation bases (M3X2 for the TT and R3X for the Boulder).
The rest of my Naim system will sit on a single Fraim next to it (300DR, NDX2/XPSDR, SCDR).
Rather curious how the 252 will work on the new rack. I don’t doubt the HRS has better isolation & dampening vs the Fraim but am curious how that will impact the 252, will it loose some of that “Naim sound”? For non Naim components, I’d suspect the HRS would be the clear winner.
Maybe it will sound a lot better! I suspect if it changes some of the Naim/Fraim-ish sound signature I can always try setting the glass and balls on the HRS rack for the 252.
OTOH there are plenty of people on these forums enjoying the Naim sound who have no Fraim shelves at all. When I had my 282/250 I used a Salamander component cabinet.
My dealer has a Naim customer who unloaded all their Fraim for a HRS rack.
I wonder if I do not want to try the REL subwoofer now as it is quite big in terms of depth. Is tipping my toe in sub using the KEF KC62 still a good enough first try? I have never use a sub before and REL really looked big to me.
I’m using KC62 with RCA connections and it’s a great little sub. It is the size and performance that convinced me to try it out. It goes very deep for its size and integrates very good with my speakers. I used REW to find proper gain and crossover point.
